Six Tennis Student-Athletes Earn ITA Scholar-Athlete Honors

AMHERST, N.Y. - Six student-athletes from the Daemen College men's and women's tennis teams have earned Scholar-Athlete honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), the organization announced today. Women's team members Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y.), Morgan Park (Hamburg, N.Y.), Lorissa Yuen (Portland, Ore.) and MacKenzie Robbins (Rome, N.Y.), and men's team members Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain) and James Schaab-Rozbicki (Amherst, N.Y.) were among the 4,328 student-athletes across the country to earn the academic accolades.

To be considered for ITA Scholar-Athlete honors, student-athletes must achieve a grade-point average of 3.50 on a 4.0 scale for the entire 2017-18 academic year. The ITA Scholar-Athlete program covers all levels of collegiate competition, from Division I to junior college.

On the women's side, both Ringler and Robbins are repeat honorees. For Ringler, who recently graduated from Daemen's social work program, it marks the third straight year that she's earned the accolade, and her second major award from the ITA this year; earlier this spring she was named the regional recipient of the ITA's Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award. Robbins, who was a sophomore during the 2017-18 year, is studying in Daemen's physical therapy program, as is Park who recently completed her junior year. Yuen was in her first collegiate year studying in Daemen's business administration program.

Both Ruiz Martinez and Schaab-Rozbicki are repeat honorees as well. It's the second major academic accolade this year for Ruiz Martinez, a business administration major, who was recently named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District Men's At-Large Team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Schaab-Rozbicki is studying in Daemen's forensic science program.

In addition to the individual honorees, the Daemen women's tennis team was named an ITA All-Academic Team. The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to programs that achieve a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 for the 2017-18 academic year, a benchmark achieved by 735 teams nationwide this year. It marks the third straight year that the Daemen women's tennis team earned ITA All-Academic Team honors.
