As an international student myself from The Bahamas, it’s no coincidence that diversity and inclusion is something that I am passionate about and take the utmost pride in. To me, the value of diversity and inclusion coinciding goes far beyond establishing policies, programs, and /or head-counts. It also includes how well the contributions, presence, and perspectives of different groups of people are valued and integrated into our environment on a day-to-day basis. From my perspective, the concept of diversity and inclusion serves greatly to afford people from all walks of life the luxury of opportunity.
Apart from that, from my own personal experience, it also establishes a tremendous sense and feeling of trust, belonging, support, and comfortability that is indescribable. All of these things in particular are vital for preserving the richness of the college experience for every individual by encouraging them to be their true selves and give their all day-in and day-out. I for one can certainly attest that being a part of the Daemen family is something that really keeps me going. Particularly when I get down or feel homesick for extended periods of time away from my loved ones, it’s always refreshing to know that someone has my back and my best interests at heart.
In efforts to continue strengthening our community here at Daemen, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), as well as myself, has really embraced the ideal of diversity and inclusion as a whole. Some of the things that we have been doing to take initiative are coordinating our efforts with other clubs and organizations on campus to continually create more awareness across the board. As an international student and executive board member of SAAC, I feel a great sense of obligation to pay forward all the support that I received throughout my time here. I will continue to advocate for more progress toward making the Daemen community more diverse and inclusive as a whole, in order to preserve the quality of the college experience for current and future students.
