OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's soccer team fell to 2-10-1 overall today after suffering a 2-0 loss on the road to East Coast Conference foe N.Y. Institute of Technology at President's Stadium.
After more than 70 minutes of scoreless action, NYIT's Martin Sundell finally broke through, netting his second marker of the season at the 73:01 mark. Â Alex Barbosa picked up an assist on the play as the homestanding Bears got on the board.
Later, with the hosts clinging to a one-goal lead, John Camponeschi provided some breathing room with a goal at the 86:36 mark, essentially icing the game. Â For Camponeschi, it was his second goal of the season.
With the win, NYIT (9-4-1, 5-2-0 ECC) keeps pace with the upper-echelon of the ECC, moving into a three-way tie for second place in the
league standings with idle Molloy College and Queens College. Â Daemen drops to 0-6-1 in the league with today's result.
The loss spoiled a tremendous effort by freshman goalkeeper
Justin Figler (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) who recorded his first career game with double-figure saves. Â Figler faced an NYIT offensive barrage that produced 23 total shots, 14 of which went on frame, but the freshman stood tall between the pipes, making 12 saves despite taking the loss.
His counterpart, Alvaro Cruz, faced five total shots from the Daemen offense, making two saves to record his second shutout of the season.
Junior
Alex Reid (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) and freshman
Kyle Tracy (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) paced the Daemen offense, accounting for four total shots and both Daemen's shots on goal today.
With three games remaining in the regular season, the road only gets tougher for Daemen as the Wildcats visit Long Island University Post later this weekend (Sunday, October 25, 2:30 p.m.). Â The Pioneers (10-1-2, 7-0-0 ECC), picked first in the
2015 ECC preseason poll, are currently ranked No. 2 in the latest
National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) East Region poll, as well as No. 10 in the
NSCAA Division II national poll.
