Junior guard Sarah Saba is the first ECC weekly award recipient for Daemen this season Women's Basketball 12/20/2016 2:58:00 PM Tom McDermott, Sports Information Consultant Saba Named ECC Player Of The Week Daemen Junior Recently Surpassed The 1,000-Point Milestone For Her Career AMHERST, N.Y. - Daemen College women's basketball standout Sarah Saba (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) has been named the East Coast Conference Player of the Week for games held December 12-19. The official announcement was made via the league's weekly women's basketball report which was released this afternoon from conference headquarters in Central Islip, N.Y. Saba's selection is the first weekly honor for a Daemen women's basketball player this season. Saba, a 6-foot junior guard, averaged 22.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists, and also added three steals and one block over two games last week. She scored a career-high 28 points in a one-point league loss to New York Institute of Technology last Wednesday. She produced 20 points in the second half alone, including a tie-breaking jumper with 16 seconds remaining before the Bears answered with a game-winning three-pointer moments later. She added 17 points in a non-league loss to Saint Anselm College on Dec. 19. Saba surpassed 1,000 points for her career when she drained a three-pointer late in the third quarter, becoming the 23rd player in team history to accomplish the milestone. She shot 46.9 percent on the week, draining 15-of-32 shots. Saba has scored in double figures in nine of Daemen's 10 games thus far and ranks second in scoring average (16.4 ppg). She also leads the team in rebounding (7.0 rpg) and blocks (8) and ranks second in steals (17). Saba has scored in double figures in 56 of her 65 career games and is averaging 15.5 points and 6.8 rebounds a game over her career. She became the first-ever women's basketball player from Daemen to earn first-team All-ECC honors last winter after closing out the season as Daemen's leader in points (432), rebounds (165), blocks (44) and steals (36). She became the first player since former great Sarah Soroka in 2010-11 to lead the team in points, rebounding, blocks and steals. This is the second time in her career that Saba has been named the ECC Player of the Week. She previously earned the honor in early February last season. She was also a six-time ECC Rookie of the Week honoree during the 2014-15 season.
