Saba Named ECC Player Of The Week

Sophomore Guard Led Daemen To Back-To-Back Home Wins Last Week

AMHERST, N.Y. - Daemen College women's basketball player Sarah Saba (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) has been named the East Coast Conference Player of the Week for games played February 1-7.  The official announcement came via the league's weekly women's basketball report released this afternoon from conference headquarters in Central Islip, N.Y.

Saba, a 6-foot sophomore guard, led Daemen to a pair of home victories last week, defeating Dowling College (71-67 in overtime) and University of Bridgeport (88-70).  For the week, Saba averaged 23.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game while shooting 50-percent from the field (17-for-34), 33-percent from three-point range (3-for-9) and 69-percent from the free throw line (9-for-13).

Saba opened the week by scoring 21 points on 9-of-18 shooting in the win over Dowling.  She added five boards and two blocks in Daemen's first overtime victory since a 79-76 triumph over Mercy College late last season.

Against Bridgeport, Saba posted 25 points - just one shy of her career-high - and added 10 rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals.  It marked Saba's second double-double of the season, and the ninth of her career already.

The results marked Daemen's first back-to-back wins of the season, as the Wildcats improved to 6-13 overall and 4-9 in league play, getting themselves back into contention for a potential ECC Tournament berth.  At present, just two wins separates ninth-place Daemen from fifth-place Saint Thomas Aquinas College (13-9, 6-8 ECC).  The top six teams in the final regular season standings will advance to the conference tournament.

Saba has now scored in double figures in 16 of the last 17 games, including 12-straight.  She's posted six games of 20 or more points, and is averaging a team-best 16.6 points per game, which ranks sixth in the league.  She's also contributing 5.9 rebounds per game, and has blocked a team-best 36 shots which ranks fourth in the ECC.

For her career, Saba has totaled 727 points (15.1 ppg) and 323 rebounds (6.7 rpg) in 48 career games.

The announcement today marked Saba's first-ever selection as the ECC Player of the Week, and she becomes Daemen's first recipient since former Wildcat Lindsay Stoddard (Limestone, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) was so honored for games played January 6-12, 2014 during Daemen's first season as an ECC affiliate.  Saba led the league as a six-time ECC Rookie of the Week honoree during her freshman campaign last season.

Saba and the Wildcats get another opportunity to climb the ECC ladder when they square off with Saint Thomas Aquinas on the road this Thursday, February 11.
