Wildcat Track Stars Grab All-Region Honors

AMHERST, N.Y. - Daemen College outdoor track and field athletes Mackenzie Donahue (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) and Amy Trabert (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst) have been named All-Region honorees by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).  Donahue and Trabert each earned the All-Region distinction for the 10,000-meter run, and Donahue additionally picked up a selection for the 5,000-meter run.

The top five individuals in each event in each region earned All-Region honors.  Daemen is a member of the NCAA Division II East Region which is comprised of the East Coast Conference, Northeast-10 Conference and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.

The All-Region honors are just another in a laundry list of accomplishments for Donahue, who was also recently named Daemen's Female Athlete of the Year.  She opened the outdoor track season by winning the 5,000-meter run at the Alfred State Invitational, and she went on to set a new team record in the event at the ROC City Classic on April 11, finishing as the runner-up there with a benchmark time of 17:56.41.

After shortening her race distance at two consecutive meets, including a second-team All-ECC performance in the 1,500-meter run at the conference championship meet on April 23, Donahue jumped back to the 5,000-meter distance at the prestigious Penn Relays Carnival, an invitation-only event on April 28.  There, she shaved more than 45 seconds off her team record with a time of 17:10.78, surpassing the provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Division II National Championships in the process.  The record-setting time placed Donahue 30th out of 63 competitors which included athletes from the likes of University of Florida, Penn State University and Duke University to name a few.  She finished fourth out of the 10 Division II athletes in the race.

Donahue concluded her junior season by competing in the 10,000-meter run at the Cardinal Last Chance Meet last week.  In that race, she posted a school-record time of 36:31.71 which also surpassed the NCAA Division II National Championships provisional qualifying time.

The previous record-holder in the 10,000-meter run was Trabert who set the benchmark twice this season.  She first did so at the ECC Championships on April 23, claiming the individual title in the event and subsequent first-team All-ECC honors with a time of 40:10.13.  The time was also good enough to set a new ECC Championships record.

Just five days later at the Penn Relays, Trabert shaved more than two-and-a-half minutes off her time in the 10,000-meter run, completing the race with a time of 37:29.63 to hold the record until Donahue's performance last weekend.

Donahue and Trabert become the first Daemen athletes to earn All-Region honors in outdoor track and field.  Donahue was also an All-Region honoree during both the indoor track and field and cross country seasons earlier this year.
