From The Director of Athletics' Desk...

Happy #GivingTuesday Daemen Wildcat fans!  In line with the theme of the day, this month's PawPrints focuses giving back and giving forward.

In the next three years, Daemen Athletics is poised to continue to give back to our student-athletes, Daemen College and the Western New York Region as a whole. In light of that, I am going to use this Paw Prints to ask you to take advantage of this #GivingTuesday to give forward by making a donation in any amount to support Daemen Athletics and help us accomplish all the good we will give back in the upcoming years.

I will share when Daemen President Gary Olson asked me to serve as Director of Athletics, the most daunting task Daemen Athletics faced was the creation of outside revenue streams needed to fund the programs growth and ultimate success in NCAA Division II competition.  At that time, there were minimal sources of outside funding.  Since then, we have worked hard to develop several revenue streams that help us grow without impacting college tuition rates.  Additionally, unlike other NCAA athletics programs, in July 2014, Daemen did not have a culture of giving back or forward (alumni or otherwise) for its athletics programs.  In the past two years, we have worked hard to develop an athletics program that inspires school spirit, enrollment growth and investment by alumni, charitable foundations and donors.

Daemen Athletics Student-Athletes, Coaches, and Staff have so much to be thankful for, but we are especially thankful for your support.  By reading Paw Prints, attending games or following us on daemenwildcats.com, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram you let us know that you support our student-athletes and the overall good Daemen Athletics is doing in Western New York.  We know that dollars can be tight and giving requests are many, but for the reasons listed below we believe Daemen Athletics is a program that gives back to our students and our community and thus is worthy of giving forward.  Here is a list of just some of our accomplishments in just this past year that hope inspires you to give forward

  • Daemen student-athletes carry an average cumulative grade-point average of 3.1 on 4.0 scale, on average 50% of our students earn a spot on the College's Dean's List, and our graduation rates are more than 15% higher than the general student body.
  • Daemen Women's Volleyball qualified for NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament.
  • Daemen Men's Basketball competes for ECC Championship title in Washington DC.
  • Daemen Cross Country runners and Women triathletes earn national and regional NCAA Division II recognition.
  • Daemen Athletics has helped grow the College's enrollment footprint by recruiting students from South America, Germany, Romania, the Netherlands, New Zealand, California, Colorado and Texas.
  • Daemen received over $100,000 in grant money from the NCAA to fund student-athlete leadership development programs.
  • Daemen Athletics received $50,000 from local foundations to help us grow our program and strategically plan for the future.
  • To show an independent source of funding for our growth, Daemen Athletics developed external funding sources through expanded rentals, camps, concessions, ticket sales, licensed product sales, corporate partnerships and athletics memberships
  • Daemen Athletics brings business to Buffalo as Daemen has been selected to host the ECC Volleyball tournament and two NCAA Division II National Championship regional qualifiers that will bring over $500,000 in hotel and restaurant business to Western New York.
  • Daemen Athletics has built a system and staff that supports extensive community programming and rentals in both its LumsDen and Academic and Wellness Center buildings that serve on average 100 WNY residents per day.

We truly hope that you have read this far J and that you will take a moment to donate whatever amount you can afford to give forward and show support for what  Daemen Athletics has done and will continue to do.  Please click here for donation information.

Thanks again for following Daemen Athletics.  We look forward to seeing you at the Daemen Women's Volleyball match this weekend or at an upcoming men's and women's basketball game.  As always, feel free to email bniland@daemen.edu with comments, questions or concerns.  We always appreciate hearing from those who care about Daemen Athletics.
