AMHERST, N.Y. - Sophomore forward Jamie Boyar (Williamsville, N.Y.) of Daemen College has been named the East Coast Conference Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for games played Oct. 2-8. The official announcement was made via the league's weekly sport report which was released this afternoon from conference headquarters in West Babylon, N.Y.
Boyar totaled two goals and an assist over two games last week, including her league-leading fifth game-winning goal of the year. It marked the second time this season Boyar has been named ECC Offensive Player of the Week (previously named for games played Sept. 4-10). She is the first player to collect the honor multiple times this season.
She opened the week by netting Daemen's lone goal in a 1-0 victory over long-time rival Roberts Wesleyan College on Oct. 4. The evenly-played game remained scoreless until Boyar came through with another heroic effort for the Wildcats. After taking a pass in the midfield, she juked and jived her way into the right side of the box where she created some space and sent a curling shot off her left foot which found its way over the goal line after banking off the far post at the 72:54 mark.
Boyar capped the week with a goal and an assist in a 3-2 loss to regionally-ranked Mercy College. Boyar totaled six shots in the game and headed up an offense that put up good numbers against one the top defenses in the ECC. Mercy had held six of its previous 10 opponents scoreless and the Mavericks entered the game allowing an average of six total shots and three shots on goal per game. Daemen's 13 total shots and nine shots on goal were the most surrendered by Mercy in a game all season. In addition, prior to the game against Daemen, nationally-ranked Adelphi University was only the team to score more than one goal against the Mavericks this season.
Boyar, who was a one-time ECC Rookie of the Week honoree last season, becomes the second Daemen player to be named ECC Offensive Player of the Week twice in a season—joining former Wildcat forward Samantha Engel who did so in 2013. Since Daemen joined the league that season, Boyar's selection is the fifth for a Wildcat player overall (Engel was a two-time selection in 2013, Kacey Bougard was a one-time selection in 2013).
For the season, Boyar ranks in the top five among the ECC leaders in total goals (7), points (16) and shot attempts (46). Boyar has started all 28 contests since the start of the 2016 season and she has totaled 13 goals, six assists and 32 points over her career. Daemen is 7-3-1 in her career when she scores.
The Wildcats took a 6-4-1 overall record (2-3-0) ECC) into their non-league tilt with Mercyhurst University today.
