Yuen Named East Coast Conference Rookie Of The Week

AMHERST, N.Y. - Freshman Lorissa Yuen (Portland, Ore.) of Daemen College has been named the East Coast Conference Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week for matches held from August 28 through September 3.  The official announcement was made via the league's weekly sport report which was released this afternoon from conference headquarters in West Babylon, N.Y.

Yuen was impressive while making her collegiate debut over Labor Day weekend, leading the Daemen women's tennis team to the first 2-0 start to a season in team history, dating back to the program's inception with the 2012-13 season. The Wildcats posted road wins over Northeast-10 Conference members St. Michael's College (6-3 on Sept. 2) and American International College (7-2 on Sept. 3) with Yuen playing a starring role in both victories. She posted wins in both singles and doubles play in both matches.

Against St. Michael's, Yuen teamed with senior Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) to take down Amelia Weeks and Caroline Summer 8-4 in the second doubles position. It was an important point for Daemen as they avoided a 3-0 sweep in the match coming out of doubles play.

Yuen went on to cruise to 6-0 win in the first set of her singles match vs. the Purple Knights' Abby Ramsay. The second set proved a little tougher, but Yuen emerged on top 7-6 to win the match.

The following day at American International, Yuen again paired with Ringler in the second doubles position and the duo cruised past Morgan Hill and Alice Calabrese, 8-1.

Appearing in the first singles position for the second-straight day, Yuen won an abbreviated pro set 8-3 against AIC's Carleyah McLean to claim the point for the Wildcats.

Yuen becomes just the second women's tennis player from Daemen to garner either of the league's weekly accolades (Player of the Week or Rookie of the Week), and the first since Brianna Fiorita earned ECC Rookie of the Week honors for the opening week of the 2013-14 season.

Yuen now leads Daemen (2-1 overall following Monday's loss at Bentley University) into East Coast Conference play this weekend. The Wildcats visit league powerhouse Queens College Saturday and Molloy College Sunday.
