McKrell Nominated For NCAA Woman of the Year Award

AMHERST, N.Y. - After completing a stellar four-year career with the Daemen College women's volleyball program, Katie McKrell (Webster, N.Y.) has been named the college's nominee for the 2018 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Woman of the Year award which aims to recognize the academic and athletic achievements, community service and leadership of graduating female student-athletes from across the NCAA's three divisions.

"We are excited to nominate Katie for the the NCAA Woman of the Year award," said Daemen's interim director of athletics, Brandi Guerinot. "Katie truly embodies the attributes of this award and has distinguished herself throughout her time as a student-athlete here at Daemen. From her contributions to the volleyball team, to her community service involvement and to her academic achievement, she has epitomized the definition of a student-athlete. We are proud of Katie and all she has accomplished during her time at Daemen."

McKrell is one of 581 nominees nationwide, the most ever in the 28-year history of the NCAA Woman of the Year program. Of the total number of nominees, 131 are from NCAA Division II institutions like Daemen. The pool of candidates will be narrowed in early August when each conference announces their nominees. The NCAA Woman of the Year selection committee will then choose the top 10 nominees from each of the three NCAA divisions, and then three finalists from each group before settling on one award recipient. Each one of the 30 honored nominees will be recognized and the 2018 NCAA Woman of the Year will be announced at an awards dinner at the Westin Indianapolis on Sunday, October 28.

The NCAA Woman of the Year nomination is the latest in a long line of achievements for McKrell who, just in the last seven months, has been named a semifinalist for the Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup, co-recipient of the Daemen College C.L.A.W. Award which recognizes outstanding character, leadership, academic achievement and work ethic, and recipient of the East Coast Conference Excellence in Community and Character Award.

Athletically, McKrell was a contributing member of the Daemen women's volleyball team for the past four seasons. The 5-foot-8 setter appeared in 91 matches over the course of her career, and finished fourth in team history with 2,549 assists.

Off the court, McKrell has spent over 400 hours as a volunteer for multiple organizations and activities such as Habitat for Humanity, Penfield Ambulance and the Flower City Work Camp among others. She also founded Daemen's chapter of Athletes in Action, a ministry for student-athletes. With a group of Athletes in Action members from across the country, McKrell traveled to Southeast Asia earlier this spring to provide leadership and volleyball clinics for children.

In the classroom, McKrell has maintained above a 3.5 grade-point average while studying in Daemen's physician assistant program. She has been named to the Dean's List five times, and has been a three-time ECC Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient.

McKrell becomes Daemen's second NCAA Woman of the Year nominee, joining former cross country/track and field star Mackenzie Donahue (East Aurora, N.Y.) who was also the East Coast Conference's nominee last year.
