AMHERST, N.Y. - Daemen College women's soccer player
Jamie Boyar (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) has been named the East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week for games held September 12-18. The official announcement was made via the league's
weekly report for women's soccer which was released this afternoon from conference headquarters in Central Islip, N.Y.
Boyar, a 5-foot-2 freshman forward, scored the first two goals of her career while helping Daemen achieve a 1-1-1 record during the week. Last week's results have Boyar and the Wildcats sitting at 3-3-1 overall and 1-1-0 in East Coast Conference play this season.
The Wildcat greenhorn registered her first career goal in the 70th minute of Daemen's 2016 home opener, a non-league contest vs. Mansfield University last Wednesday, September 14. Boyar carried the ball from the midfield to the right wing where she launched a high, driving shot from outside the box which found its way over the head of MU goalkeeper Rachel Fox and inside the far post. The goal erased a 1-0 deficit in what ended up being a 1-1 tie after two overtime periods.
Following a 3-0 loss to Mercy College last Friday, Boyar got Daemen on the board in a 3-1 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas College on Sunday when she took a feed from classmate
Lindsay Ciaramella (St. George, Ont./Paris District), dribbled up the sideline and scored on a high shot inside the far post. The goal came in the 62nd minute of the game, following a scoreless first half.
Through seven games this season, Boyar leads the Wildcats in shots (18) and shots on goal (10) while ranking second in goals and points (5).
Boyar's selection marks the second straight week that a Daemen player has been recognized with a weekly honor from the conference, joining sophomore goalkeeper
Jackie Wescott (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) who was named the
ECC Defensive Player of the Week for September 6-11. She also becomes the first Daemen player to garner Rookie of the Week honors since teammate
Meaghan O'Leary (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) did so for
October 5-12, 2015.
Boyar and her Wildcat teammates return to non-conference action when they host Salem International University this Thursday, September 22 at Park School Field.
