AMHERST, N.Y. – Katlyn Newberry (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athlena) of the women's bowling team and Deion Hamilton (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athlena) of the men's basketball team have been named the Daemen College Student-Athletes of the Month presented by Western New York Knee and Orthopedic Surgery PC for November 2017.

Newberry becomes the first-ever women's bowling student-athlete to earn the award since the program's inception three seasons ago. A freshman, she led the Daemen keglers to a 12-4 record during the month.

Newberry kicked off the month by leading Daemen to a second-place showing at the Medaille College Invitational. She paced the Wildcats during the two-day tournament with an 18.13 pins-per-frame scoring average—third-best among all participants. For her efforts, Newberry was named to the all-tournament team.

Newberry also helped the Wildcats to dual match wins over Hilbert College and East Coast Conference rival Roberts Wesleyan College during the month. She posted a team-high 21 strikes, converted 60-percent (26-of-43) of her spares and posted a team-best 19.10 average per frame in traditional scoring matches against Hilbert and RWC.

For the season, her 18.00 average per frame in traditional scoring matches is tops on the team. She has also posted a team-high 55 strikes in Baker format matches, and her 19 strikes during traditional scoring matches ranks second on the team.

The Daemen women's bowling team (15-4 overall record) closes out the fall portion of its schedule on Dec. 9 when it hosts St. Vincent College.

Hamilton, a redshirt junior, collects Athlete of the Month honors for the third time over his three-year career after averaging a team-high 14.0 points during the season-opening month of November. The 6-foot-4 guard/forward opened the month by earning Most Valuable Player honors after averaging 17.0 points and 5.5 rebounds during the ECC-CACC Challenge Present by WNY Knee and Orthopedic Surgery PC. He totaled 14 points and seven boards in a 62-57 win over Felician University during the opening round, and followed up with three three-pointers and 20 points in a 78-60 win over Nyack College. He scored in double figures in five of Daemen's six games, and capped the month by totaling 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists in an 82-72 win over previously unbeaten Edinboro University.

In addition to his team-high 14 points per game, Hamilton also ranked second in assists (15), steals (9) and blocks (4), third in three-pointers (8) and fourth in both field goal percentage (.444) and rebounds per game (4.5).

Hamilton has played in 59 of a possible 64 games over his career and has helped the Wildcats to a 42-22 record over that span. He has shot 49-percent (236-477) from the field over his career and has totaled 627 points, 236 rebounds and 102 assists.

Daemen (4-3, 0-0 ECC) opens East Coast Conference play Friday (Dec. 8) when it hosts unanimous league favorite and two-time defending champion St. Thomas Aquinas College.

Additional student-athletes considered for Athlete of the Month honors included Amy Trabert (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst) of the women's cross country team and Sarah Saba (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) of the women's basketball team.
