Daemen Rally Falls Short In Loss To Muskingum

Wildcats Rally From 13-Point Deficit In 60-57 Setback

MARIETTA, Ohio (Nov. 24, 2012) – Senior Hannah Nelson (Salesville, Ohio) totaled 21 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals to lead the Muskingum University women's basketball team to a 60-57 victory over Daemen College here tonight in opening-round action of the 28th annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot hosted by Marietta College.
 
Daemen, which is ranked third in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Division I poll, saw its three-game winning streak come to an end and dropped to 9-2. Muskingum improved to 2-1.
 
Senior Chelsea Andorka (Canton, Ohio/Notre Dame College) totaled 11 points, eight rebounds and three assists for Daemen and in the process recorded her 1,000th career point. She entered the game eight points shy of the milestone. Classmate Ellie Allen (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) added 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Wildcats. Allen also reached a couple career milestones, as she registered her 500th rebound and 300th assist. Senior Samantha Stanfield (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) scored a team-high 12 points for the Wildcats and also recorded eight rebounds and four steals.
 
Junior Tori Jarrett (Beallsville, Ohio) drilled four three-pointers and totaled 13 points for Muskingum, while freshman Karen Sidwell (Zanesville, Ohio) added 12 points and six rebounds.
 
Daemen trailed 56-53 with a minute to play when the Wildcats got back-to-back layups from Allen. The second layup came with 35 seconds left and gave Daemen a 57-56 lead. Sidwell answered with a three-pointer with 24 seconds left to give the Muskies a 59-57 lead. Jarrett came up with a block at the other end and then made one-of-two free throws at the other end with :04 seconds left. Daemen's game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark.
 
Daemen made just five of 14 shots and committed 11 turnovers over the first 12:24 of the game. Muskingum took advantage of the Wildcat's slow start and opened up a 20-11 lead following a conventional three-point play by Nelson with 7:36 left before halftime. Daemen answered with a layup by senior Monica Kosior (Grimsby, Ontario/Canisius College), but the Muskies upped the lead to 12 points, 25-13, after Sidwell drained a three-pointer and senior Jendy Weppler (Gahanna, Ohio) converted a layup. Sidwell later gave Muskingum its largest lead of the first half, 32-19, with 2:36 left before the break, but the Wildcats closed the half with a 7-0 run and cut the Muskie lead to six points, 32-26.
 
Daemen picked up where it left off at the start of the second half, as the Wildcats scored the first 10 points of the second half and took a 36-32 lead following a three-pointer by freshman Raeann Stilwell (Cheektowaga, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) with 15:05 to play. Muskingum quickly knotted the game at 36-36 and the final 13 minutes featured six ties and four lead changes.
 
Daemen shot just 41-percent (26-63) from the field, committed 21 turnovers and made just 3-of-16 three-pointers. Muskingum also struggled from the field, shooting just 38-percent (23-61), but made seven three-pointers in the game. Daemen posted an edge in rebounding (43-35), points in the paint (28-16) and second-chance points (14-6).
 
Daemen will face the host Marietta Pioneers in second-round action tomorrow at 3 p.m.
