PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - A three-point basket by Andrea Howard with six seconds remaining lifted the Georgetown College women's basketball team to a 61-60 victory over Daemen College today in a neutral site contest held at Frank and Janis Waller Gymnasium on day two of the Shawnee State Tournament.
Howard's signature bucket negated some heroics from Daemen's
Ellie Allen (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) who scored an acrobatic lay-in with 33 ticks left, breaking a 58-all tie and giving Daemen its first lead since the 11:11 mark of the first half.
Lizza Jonas led the way for Georgetown - the 21st ranked team in the latest NAIA Division I poll - who improved to 5-4 on the season while snapping a three-game losing skid in the process. She added 12 rebounds and six steals to the Tiger cause as well.
Also with a double-double was the Tigers' Devon Golden who totaled 10 points and 12 boards. Golden and Jonas helped Georgetown control the boards, out-rebounding Daemen 51-35 in the game.
With Daemen trailing 25-23 late in the first half, Georgetown went on an 8-2 run to close the period, opening up a 33-25 lead at the break. Golden's three-point basket got the spurt started at the 3:13 mark and another trey-ball from Howard just before the buzzer provided the Tigers with an eight-point cushion at intermission.
The Tigers extended the run when Lindsay Fultz hit a three-pointer on the opening possession of the second half, pushing the Georgetown lead to double digits for the first time (36-25).
Trailing 41-30 at the 16:59 mark on another Fultz three-pointer, Daemen went to work by outscoring the Tigers 18-8 over the next six-plus minutes to make the deficit just one point at 49-48 with 10:14 to play. The Wildcats got baskets from all five starters, including six points from junior guard
Lindsay Stoddard (Limestone, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone), in the spurt while junior reserve
Jillian Fitzner (Hamburg, N.Y./Immaculata) capped the run with a jumper off a feed from redshirt freshman
Raeann Stilwell (Cheektowaga, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster).
A Jonas jumper pushed the Tigers back ahead by three (51-48) but Daemen answered with an offensive rebound and putback by senior guard
Samantha Stanfield (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) at the 8:11 mark to again trail by just one.
Back-to-back baskets by Golden helped Georgetown open up a six-point lead (58-52) with 4:09 remaining before Daemen rattled off eight unanswered, capped by Allen's tie-breaking basket off an inbounds play in the final minute. Stanfield got the run underway with a jumper at the 2:33 mark and back-to-back scores by Stoddard knotted the score at 58-58 with 1:34 to play.
Georgetown called timeout with 15.7 seconds left and on the ensuing possession Kourtney Tyra found Howard all alone in the corner for what turned out to be the game-winning jump shot.
Daemen raced the ball down the floor but turned it over on a cross-court pass before getting a shot attempt essentially ending the game.
Howard finished with 13 points, six rebounds and three steals for the Tigers.
Stoddard continued her fine play for Daemen (11-4), albeit in a losing effort, as she scored a game-high 16 points to go with four steals.
Senior guard/forward
Chelsea Andorka (Canton, Ohio/Notre Dame College) was next with 14 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals. Stanfield chipped in with 12 points and six boards while swiping a career-high nine steals.
Daemen, which did not attempt a free throw in the game, shot 42% from the field (28-of-67) but connected on just 4-of-16 from three-point range (25%), including 1-for-8 (13%) in the pivotal second half.
Georgetown was limited to 33% shooting (23-for-69) but outscored Daemen by seven from the free throw line and converted 23 offensive rebounds into 19 points, helping them pick up the victory despite committing 24 turnovers.
The Tigers also connected on 8-of-26 (31%) from three-point range and saw their bench outscore Daemen's reserves 9-2.
Daemen will look to right the ship and shake off its two-game slide when they host Laurentian University on back-to-back days next weekend (Friday, Dec. 21 at 7pm; Saturday, Dec. 22 at 2pm).
