Box Score WEST MIFFLIN, PA - The Daemen Wildcats suffered a 60-48 loss today to #24 Point Park in the American Mideast Conference Women's Basketball Tournament Championship Game at the CCAC-South Gym. Point Park (23-6), the top seed in the AMC Tourney, earns the league's automatic bid the NAIA Division II National Championship March 7-13 in Sioux City, Iowa. The pairings for the 32-team field will be announced the evening of Feb. 29. Daemen (23-7) will have to await a possible at-large bid to nationals, and that will be announced Feb. 29 with final Top 25 poll of the season.
Point Park led, 35-19 late in the first half and had made 13 of 18 field goals at that point. The Pioneers were up, 35-28, at the half. Daemen came out strong in the early portion of the second half, but the Pioneers extended things to 43-33 with 13:25 left.
The Pioneers still led, 47-37, with 8:10 to go, and then took a commanding lead of 54-37 with 5:15 remaining. Daemen made things interesting with a quick 9-0 run to cut it to 54-46 with 2:40 remaining, but the Pioneers made some key steals late and made some big fre throws to keep the Wildcats at bay.
Emily Schartner led all scorers with 19 points for Point Park. She had 12 at the half and made three early treys to lead the Pioneers' early charge. Point Park made 8 of its first 10 shots and shot 40 percent for the game.
Kristen Beatty added 11 points as the only other Point Park player in double figures.
Monica Kosior and
Ellie Allen had 14 and 13 points, respectively for Daemen. The Wildcats managed just 33% shooting for the game (17-for-52).
Daemen won the battle of the backboard 43-27 with
Samantha Stanfield hauling in 11 boards. Allen and senior
Courtney Donovan were next with seven rebounds apiece.
