Box Score ROCKLIN, CA - The Daemen Wildcats snapped a three-match skid today as they topped the Arizona Christian Firestorm in four sets (25-18, 25-13, 25-27, 25-18) at the Warrior Challenge hosted by William Jessup University. The win brings the Wildcats' record to 2-3 with four more matches still to play over the next two days at the Challenge.
Senior
Joanna Fretthold (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda HS) pounded down 14 kills to lead the Wildcats. Junior
Jenn Karan (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park HS) chipped in with 11 kills.
The Wildcats also got solid hitting performances from junior
Kaitlin Watchey (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) and sophomore
Lindsey Nowak (Hamburg, NY/Immaculata Acad.). Watchey had six kills in the match with a hitting percentage of .545 while Nowak added nine kills in 18 attempts.
Setters
Kaley Vazquez (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West HS) and
Chelsea Turcer (Alexander, NY/Alexander Centeral HS) combined for 33 of the team's 52 assists in the match.
"We came out with a lot of energy today, but our play wasn't at its best," said head coach
Mark Parisi. "The first game which saw our team make a lot of unforced errors, but we cleaned up our contacts considerably in the second game and the score (25-13) reflected our efficiency in ball control and attack. Joanna was really clicking with Kaley today and
Kaitlin Watchey stepped up her game to be a force in the middle."
Parisi also shuffled his lineup a bit, playing senior
Katie Auge (Salamanca, NY/Salamanca HS) - normally the team's Libero - at outside hitter. The move paid off, according to Parisi.
"Katie played outside hitter for the first time in a Daemen uniform and delivered eight kills and 12 digs," Parisi said.
Next up for Daemen is matches vs. Westmont (CA) and Embry-Riddle (AZ) on day two of the Challenge.
