PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – The Daemen College women's basketball team kicked off its three-game tour through New England with a convincing 98-49 victory over the University of Maine-Presque Isle here tonight.
Daemen, which is ranked first in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Division I poll for the seventh-straight week, snapped a two-game slide and improved 17-6 on the year. UMPI, which is receiving votes in the USCAA poll, dropped to 4-10.
Freshman
Raeann Stilwell (Cheektowaga, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) erupted for a career-high 25 points in just 23 minutes off the bench for Daemen. She connected on 5-of-8 three-pointers and also totaled three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Senior
Monica Kosior (Grimsby, Ont./Canisius College) totaled a team-high 14 first-half points and finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. Senior
Samantha Stanfield (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) added 10 points, a team-high nine rebounds and five steals, while classmate
Chelsea Andorka (Canton, Ohio/Notre Dame College) chipped in 10 points and three assists. Senior
Lia Zahn (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) and junior
Lindsay Stoddard (Limestone, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) also contributed with nine points and seven assists respectively.
Senior Emily Pelletier led the Owls with four three-pointers and 14 points, while freshman Amanda Hotham added 15 points.
The Wildcats secured the win with a 27-8 run midway through the first half that turned a 16-10 Daemen lead into a 43-18 advantage. A jumper by Stanfield with 4:43 left before intermission capped the run. The Wildcats took a 49-27 lead into the break.
Daemen scored the first 12 points of the second half and later took a 78-29 lead when Stilwell drained her fifth three-pointer of the game with 9:11 left to play.
The Wildcats shot a season-high 58-percent (42-72) from the field and made 10-of-18 from behind the three-point arc. Daemen also posted a commanding 43-28 edge in rebounding and recorded 12 steals. UMPI shot just 22-percent (6-27) from the field in the second half after connecting on 11-of-24 shots (46%) in the first half.
Daemen remains in the North Country and will face the University of Maine-Fort Kent tomorrow (1/19) at 1 p.m. The Wildcats defeated UMFK, 99-50, last month at Lumsden Gymnasium. UMFK is ranked 12th in the latest USCAA Division I poll.
