Florida Memorial (3-8) 27-32—59

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Senior Kalicia Battle totaled 14 points, six rebounds and three assists to lead the Florida Memorial University women's basketball team to a 59-53 upset of Daemen College here tonight.

Daemen, which is ranked first in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Division I poll, saw its five-game winning streak come to an end and dropped to 16-5 on the year. Florida Memorial snapped a two-game losing skid and improved to 3-8.

It marked the fourth game in five days for Daemen, which had defeated three nationally-ranked opponents earlier in the week.

Senior Monica Kosior (Grimsby, Ont./Canisius College) recorded her fourth-straight double-double for Daemen and finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. Senior Ellie Allen (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) chipped in 11 points and five rebounds, while freshman Raeann Stillwell (Cheektowaga, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) added eight points and three steals off the bench.

Senior Dominique Jackson helped the FMU cause with 10 points and nine rebounds, while freshman Nicole Fisher added 10 points, three assists and three steals.

Trailing by eight points (45-37) with just over eight minutes to play, the Wildcats began chipping away at the lead and eventually cut the margin to two points, 53-51, following a three-pointer by senior Chelsea Andorka (Canton, Ohio/Notre Dame College) with 2:35 remaining. Both teams came up empty on their next possessions, before the Lions got two free throws from Battle with 1:25 left. Andorka answered with a layup at the other end, and following a FMU miss the Wildcats had the ball with 35 seconds left and a chance to tie or go ahead with a three-pointer. Daemen was off the mark with a potential game-tying shot, and the Lions regained a four-point lead (57-53) after senior Yushanda Bowe drained two free throws with 12 seconds left. The Wildcats turned the ball over on their next possession and Battle secured the win by hitting two free throws.

FMU jumped out to an early 12-4 lead, and later took its largest lead of the game, 21-11, after freshman Brittany Starling canned two free throws with 9:18 left before halftime. Daemen responded with six unanswered points and the teams then traded baskets over the final four minutes of the half. FMU took a 27-22 lead into the break.

Daemen outscored the Lions 10-2 over the first six minutes of the second half, as Kosior and Allen both netted four points during the run. A layup by Kosior with 14:06 to play capped the spurt and gave Daemen a 32-29 lead. FMU regained the lead for good with seven-straight points, and later took a 45-37 lead following a bucket by Fisher with 8:27 left.

The Wildcats shot 40-percent (23-57) from the field overall, but made just 2-of-10 from three-point land. Daemen entered the game averaging nearly six three-pointers per game. FMU shot just 32-percent (20-63) from the field, but made five three-pointers (14 attempts) and canned 14-of-15 free throws. Daemen turned the ball over 22 times, which FMU converted into 17 points.

Daemen is idle until Sunday, Jan. 13 when it travels to play NCAA Division I Cornell University. Game time is 1 p.m.
