MCKEESPORT, Pa. – Freshman Natalie Galus (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) paced a balanced attack with 13 points in her collegiate debut to lead the Daemen College women's basketball team to a 60-50 victory over Carlow University here today in opening round action of the Penn State Greater Allegheny/USCAA Tipoff Classic. It marked the 2013-14 season opener for for both teams.
Daemen advances to tomorrow's championship game where it will meet the winner of the other opening-round game between tournament host Penn State Greater Allegheny and Penn State Mount Alto. The championship game is set for 3 p.m.
Four players reached double figures for Daemen, which held a 34-30 lead at the half. Freshmen guards Leah McDonell (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Cardinal O'Hara) and Taylor Heinold (Hamburg, N.Y./Immaculata) both netted 11 points in their collegiate debuts, while redshirt sophomore Raeann Stilwell (Cheektowaga, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) added 10 points. Senior guard Lindsay Stoddard (Limestone, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) helped the Daemen cause with nine points.
Senior Jessalyn Timko led Carlow with 12 points. Sophomore Natalie Alexander added 11 points for the Celtics, while junior Erin DeSanti chipped in 10 points.
Carlow is a NAIA Division II program. Daemen and Carlow are both former members of the now defunct American Mideast Conference (AMC). Today's game marked the 40th all-time meeting between the two long-time rivals. Daemen now owns a 34-6 advantage in the all-time series.
