FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's basketball team went into overtime for their second consecutive game bidding for another remarkable comeback victory, but this time coming up short, falling 95-86 to the host Queens College Knights. With the loss, Daemen drops to 3-7 overall and 1-4 in ECC play while Queens improves to 9-3, 5-1.
Sophomore
Raeann Stilwell (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) and freshman
Leah McDonell (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Cardinal O'Hara) both scored 21 points apiece for the Wildcats. Stilwell also added six assists while McDonell collected six rebounds. Senior
Lindsay Stoddard (Limestone, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) and freshman
Natalie Galus (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) both added 13 points while Stoddard also contributed a team-high eight assists.
The game was relatively close throughout as it was essentially a back-and-forth affair. Daemen took their largest lead of the game, 7-6, following a fast break layup by Stilwell with 15:20 left to go in the first half. The teams traded baskets for the next few minutes as Queens found themselves up by one (12-11) with 11:19 left before halftime.
Queens then went on a 16-7 spurt claiming their largest lead of the night, 28-18, at the 6:23 mark. The Wildcats fought back before halftime and brought the score within three, 40-37, after a last second layup from Stoddard.
Daemen opened the second half scoring six of the first eight points to regain the lead for the last time following a layup by
Somara Colon (Bronx, N.Y./Mott Haven Village Prep) assisted by
Taylor Heinold (Hamburg, N.Y./Immaculata) at the 17:25 mark putting the Wildcats up 43-42. The Knights then took control as they went up 50-43 but Daemen quickly responded with back to back-to-back-to-back three-pointers by Stilwell, McDonell and Stoddard to tie the game 52-52 with 14:24 left to play.
Queens then used another 15-5 run to lead by double digits after a layup by Mackenzie Rowland with 9:16 left in the game. Daemen slowly but surely came back to tie the score 80-80 after a three-pointer by Stilwell and two made free throws from McDonell to push the game into overtime. The Wildcats were outscored by the Knights 15-6 during the extra period to provide the final margin.
Queens shot 49-percent from the field (37-for-75) while the Wildcats went 28-for-67 (42-percent). The Knights forced 20 turnovers in the game, which resulted in 25 points for the hosts. Queens also finished with a 51-34 edge in rebounding.
Madison Rowland scored a team-high 33 points and added three steals off the bench while teammate Mackenzie Rowland chipped in 25 points and eight rebounds for the Knights.
Daemen is idle until Jan. 4 when they travel to Sparkill, N.Y. for a date with East Coast Conference opponent St, Thomas Aquinas College at 1 p.m. at Aquinas Hall. Daemen's next home game is not until Jan. 12 when it hosts the University of the District of Columbia in an ECC game at 1 p.m.
