WELLAND, Ont. - A 50-point first half paved the way for the Daemen College women's basketball team which sprinted to an 85-52 rout of Niagara College today at the Welland Campus Athletic Center today.
The game was played under the international rules employed by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association, meaning four 10-minute quarters and a 24-second shot clock were used, amongst other changes to the usual NCAA rules used in the United States.
A different set of rules didn't stop the Wildcats from canning 57-percent of their shots in the first half (21-for-37) en route to a 50-22 halftime lead and, eventually, their 22nd win of the season. For the game, Daemen connected on 35-of-64 shots (55-percent).
Senior center
Monica Kosior (Grimsby, Ont./Canisius College), playing in her home country, paced a balanced Daemen lineup with 14 points and seven rebounds. Kosior hit on 7-of-14 from the field and added two blocked shots.
Starting guards
Ellie Allen (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) and
Lindsay Stoddard (Limestone, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) split 26 points between them with Stoddard canning six of her seven field goal attempts. Allen added a game-high six assists.
Senior guard/forward
Chelsea Andorka (Canton, Ohio/Notre Dame College) notched her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds while also dishing five assists. The 12-rebound effort matched a career-high.
Senior guard
Samantha Stanfield (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) matched Stoddard's hot shooting with a 6-for-7 performance of her own. She swiped five more steals giving her 96 on the season as she moves into sole possession of 10th place on Daemen's all-time leader list for steals in a single season.
Freshman super sub Raeann Silwell (Cheektowaga, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) rounded out Daemen's six double figure scorers with 11 points on 4-for-8 shooting. She also collected five assists and three steals as part of her fifth double-figure scoring effort since Jan. 1.
Allana Arundell (Toronto, Ont.) paced the Knights with a game-high 19 points on 7-for-15 shooting.
The hosts were limited to just 26-percent shooting (21-for-80) in the contest and committed 19 turnovers.
Daemen, the top-ranked team in the last nine United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Division I polls, rounds out their regular season when they travel to Salem, W. Va. next Saturday (Feb. 9) to face NCAA Division II indepedent Salem International University. Daemen tamed the Tigers, 74-55, in the Wildcats' final home game of the season on Jan. 26. USCAA National Tournament bids are expected to be announced on Friday, Feb. 15.
