ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – Senior Lindsay Stoddard (Limestone, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) came just two assists shy of recording her second-straight triple-double, as she registered 21 points, a career-high 15 rebounds and eight assists to lead the Daemen College women's basketball team to an 83-64 non-conference victory over Dominican College here tonight. Daemen, a member of the East Coast Conference, snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 4-9 on the year. Dominican, of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, dropped to 3-9.
Stoddard's eight assists gives her exactly 400 for her career and makes her the seventh player in program history to record 400 career assists. She currently leads the ECC in assists per game (6.2).
Sophomore Raeann Stilwell (Cheektowaga, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) continued her solid play of late, as she went 4-of-8 from downtown and finished with 22 points and four assists. Stilwell, who scored a career-high 36 points in a 93-91 loss to Mercy College last night, has now averaged 24 points a game over the past five games. She is tied for the lead among ECC players in three-point field goals made (34).
Freshman Natalie Galus (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) helped the Daemen cause with 13 points and four steals, while fellow rookie Taylor Heinold (Hamburg, N.Y./Immaculata) added 10 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Somara Colon (Bronx, N.Y./Mott Haven Village Prep) chipped in a career-high 11 points in just 15 minutes off the bench.
Senior KC Jentzen (Pearl River, N.Y.) led the host Chargers with 15 points and eight rebounds, while freshman Lisa Bouffard (Wallkill, N.Y.) added 10 points.
The teams exchanged baskets early on before Daemen took control with a 14-0 run. A layup by Galus with 16:38 left before halftime ignited the run and a three-pointer by Stilwell six minutes later capped it and gave the Wildcats a 22-8 advantage. Dominican scored the next four points, but Daemen responded with five unanswered points and regained a 15-point lead following another layup by Galus with 8:19 left before the break. The Wildcats took their largest lead of the half, 36-19, following a layup by Heinold with just over four minutes left in the half, and Daemen took a 42-27 lead into halftime.
Daemen maintained a double-digit lead the entire second half. The Wildcats held a 12-point advantage (51-39) eight minutes into the second half when a conventional three-point play by Stoddard sparked them on a decisive 9-0 run. Stoddard scored the first five points during the run, which gave the Wildcats a 60-39 lead with 9:37 left. Dominican came no closer than 16 points the rest of the way.
Daemen shot a sizzling 58-percent (15-26) from the field in the first half and finished a season-high 45-percent (26-58) from the field overall. Dominican committed 35 personal fouls in the game and Daemen took advantage by going 26-of-40 from the charity stripe. Dominican connected on just 9-of-33 shots (23%) in the first half and shot just 28-percent (21-75) for the game.
The Chargers connected on just 3-of-20 from behind the three-point arc. Daemen, which entered the game averaging 28 three-point field goal attempts per game, made good on 5-of-12 from downtown. Daemen posted a 51-48 advantage in rebounding.
Daemen returns to action Sunday (Jan. 12) when it plays its first home game since Nov. 23. The Wildcats will host University of the District of Columbia in an East Coast Conference game at 1 p.m.
