Wildcats Tame Mavericks in Women's Basketball Exhibition

Saba Paces Balanced Attack With 14 Points

AMHERST, N.Y. – Freshman Sarah Saba (Lancaster, N.Y.) paced a balanced attack with 14 points to lead the Daemen College women's basketball team to 92-55 victory over Medaille College in an exhibition game tonight at Daemen's Lumsden Gymnasium.

Junior Raeann Stilwell (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) scored 10 first-half points and finished with 12 points for the host Wildcats, while Niagara University transfer Shy Britton (Rochester, N.Y.) also netted 12 points in her Daemen debut. Sophomore Natalie Galus (Hamburg, N.Y.) added 10 points and 11 rebounds for the hosts. Sophomore Leah McDonell (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) chipped in five points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Senior center Morgan Howe (Hunt, N.Y.) paced the Mavericks with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Neither team led by more than six points during a back-and-fourth first eight minutes of the game. Daemen took a nine-point advantage, 30-21, following a jumper by Britton with 8:32 left in the half, but Medaille answered with a 6-2 spurt and pulled to within five points, 32-27, following a layup by Howe with 5:46 left before the break.

Medaille would come no closer, as the Wildcats outscored the Mavericks 14-6 the rest of the half and the hosts took a 46-33 lead into the break. Stilwell and Saba both scored seven points during the late Daemen run.

Daemen continued the run at the start of the second half and extended the lead to 29-points, 68-39, eight minutes into the second stanza. A nice fast-break reverse layup by Galus with 12:12 left to play capped the run. Daemen maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the way.

Daemen shot 57-percent (17-30) from the field in the second half and finished 46-percent (32-70) from the field.

Daemen tips off the 2014-15 season on Nov. 22 when it travels to Holy Family University for a non-league game.
