Women's Basketball: Knights Hold Off Wildcats

Britton Paces Daemen With Second-Straight Double-Double

AMHERST, N.Y. – Sophomore Madison Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y.) totaled 25 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and three steals to lead Queens College to an 82-67 victory over Daemen College here today in East Coast Conference women's basketball action.
 
Queens, which was picked third in the ECC preseason poll, has now won five of its last six games and improved to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the ECC. Daemen, which opened ECC play with a 72-60 win over Molloy last night, dropped to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
 
Senior Shy Britton (Rochester, N.Y./Niagara University) recorded her second-straight double-double for Daemen and finished with 20 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. Junior Raeann Stilwell (Cheektowaga, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) drilled three three-pointers and scored a team-high 22 points for the Wildcats, while sophomore Natalie Galus (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) added eight points 11 rebounds and two blocks. Galus has now recorded at least one blocked shot in 21-straight games dating back to last season.
 
Junior MacKenzie Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y.) helped the Queens cause with 17 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and two steals, while junior Imani Davidson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in 11 points.
 
Both teams struggled to score early on and the game remained scoreless until the Knights ran off eight unanswered points. Queens later took a 16-2 lead after Madison Rowland hit a floater in the lane with 12:02 left in the half. Queens held a 23-11 lead when the Wildcats put together a 7-1 run and cut the lead to six points, 24-18, when Galus drained a three-pointer just before the shot clock expired. Daemen later made it a one possession game, 26-24, after a Stilwell three-pointer with 4:57 left before the break. The Knights then scored five straight points and later regained a double-digit lead, 37-27, after Madison Rowland canned two free throws with 1:31 left before the break. Queens took a 41-31 lead into the break.
 
Queens scored the first two buckets of the second half and later took a 53-33 lead following a fast-break layup by freshman Taylor Miller (Brooklyn, N.Y.) three minutes into the second half. Queens held a 65-46 lead when the Wildcats rallied with eight-straight points. Back-to-back three-pointers by Stilwell capped the spurt and cut the lead to 11 points, 65-54, with 8:55 left. Queens secured the win with an 11-0 run featuring the Rowland sisters. MacKenzie started the run with a fast-break layup that was followed up by back-to-back three-pointers by Madison. A conventional three-point play by MacKenzie with 6:25 left capped the run and gave the Knights a 76-54 lead.
 
Queens shot 45-percent (35-for-78) from the floor and benefitted from 25 Daemen turnovers, which the visitors converted into 23 points. Daemen shot just 35-percent (21-for-60) from the field overall and made just 5-of-22 from behind the three-point arc. Daemen posted a 48-38 edge in rebounds, but the visitors finished with a commanding 48-26 advantage in points in the paint.
 
Daemen heads to The Sunshine State at the start of next week to take part in the Trip Sports Cruzin Classic. The Wildcats will play Barry University Tuesday (Dec. 16) and take on Goucher College Thursday (Dec. 18). Both games take place on the campus of Barry University in Miami Shores, Fla.
 
POST GAME NOTES: Raeann Stilwell has now recorded at least one three-pointer in 55 of her 63 career games and ranks sixth in career three-point field goals made at Daemen with 146.
