Lindsay Stoddard (Limestone, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) made the most of her final home game as she totaled 26 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and four steals to lead Daemen College to an 87-72 victory over the University of Bridgeport here today in East Coast Conference women's basketball action.
Daemen improved to 8-18 overall and 5-15 in the ECC. Bridgeport dropped to 6-19 overall and 4-15 in the league.
It marked the regular-season finale for Daemen, which closed out the year by winning four of its final 10 games. Daemen now awaits word on a possible bid to the upcoming United States Collegiate Athletic Conference (USCAA) championship tournament. Daemen is the defending champion of the tournament, which takes place March 5-8 in Uniontown, Pa. The eight-team field will be announced Feb. 25.
Stoddard equaled her career-high for points and recorded her 10th double-double of the season. Her six assists gives her 477 for her career and moves her into fourth place in career assists at Daemen. She also recorded her 900
th career point, her 500
th career rebound and her 150
th career steal during the game. Sophomore
Raeann Stilwell (Cheektowaga, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) drilled four three-pointers for the Wildcats and finished with 22 points, 20 of which came in the second half. Stilwell's four triples gives her 77 for the season and a new school-record for three-pointers made in a season. She surpassed the previous mark of 75 set by Angela Tylec during the 2002-03 season. Natalie Galus (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) helped the Daemen cause with 14 points and eight rebounds, while fellow rookie
Taylor Heinold (Hamburg, N.Y./Immaculata) added 11 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Senior Aziza Patterson (Teaneck, N.J.) paced the Purple Knights with a season-high 36 points, as she connected on 13-of-29 shots overall and was 8-for14 from downtown. She was 7-of-8 from three-point land and totaled 28 of her 36 points in the first half.
Bridgeport connected on just four of its first 16 shots and trailed 16-12 eight minutes into the game, but the Purple Knights scored 15 of the next 19 points. Patterson drilled three three-pointers during the run and a jumper by sophomore Stephanie Holt (Holden, Mass.) with 5:48 left before halftime capped it and gave the visitors a 27-20 lead. Patterson's sixth three-pointer of the first half gave the Purple Knights a 34-23 lead with just under three minutes left before the break, but the Wildcats closed the half with an 11-5 spurt. Galus hit two three-pointers during the run, including one just before the halftime horn that made the score 39-34 Bridgeport.
Daemen stormed out of the locker room with a 20-7 run that featured four three-pointers, two from Stilwell and one each by Galus and Stoddard. A layup by Stilwell with 13:28 left capped the run and gave the Wildcats a 54-46 lead. Bridgeport quickly cut the lead to two points, 56-54, but Stilwell scored the next seven points to give the Wildcats a 63-54 advantage. The last three points came via a three-pointer, which set the school-record for triples in a season. Daemen later took a 14-point lead following three free throws by Stoddard with 7:33 left, and Bridgeport came no closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
Daemen shot 43percent (15-35) from the field in the second half and finished 25-for-61 (41%) overall. The Wildcats connected on 10-of-24 three-pointers, marking the seventh time this season they have made 10 or more three-pointers in a game. Daemen attempted 36 free throws in the game and made 27, including a 17-for-23 clip in the second half. Bridgeport shot 35-percent (24-for-69) from the field and made 9-of-21 from downtown. The Wildcats finished with a 48-40 advantage in total rebounds. The Wildcats collected 14 offensive rebounds, which resulted in a 15-9 advantage in second-chance points.
