AMHERST, N.Y. – The Daemen College women's volleyball team dropped a match against Bridgeport University in an ECC match up in three sets (24-26, 12-25, 19-25). Bridgeport is currently first in the conference and will increase their record to 15-7 overall with an unblemished 8-0 mark in ECC competition. With the loss, Daemen will fall just under .500 with a 10-11 mark overall and 5-3 record in ECC play.
The Wildcats came out swinging in the first set of the game by chipping away with several two-point spurts. Daemen led for the majority of the game until a kill from Sara Cruz tied the game at 18-18. Cruz followed her kill with an ace and gained back the lead for the Knights. Daemen would fight back to chip away at the lead but the Knights went on to win the final three points of the match and win 26-24.
The second set was a much different as the Knights started by winning 10 of the first 11 points to gain an undeniable lead that Daemen was unable to bounce back from. Errors were the downfall for the Wildcats as the Knights gained nine of their points due to Daemen errors. Bridgeport would go on to win the set 25-12.
The third set was extremely back-and-forth as neither team had a run of more than three points. The Knights would win the first three points of the game, but Daemen tied the score by winning the next three straight. The Wildcats would gain their first lead of the set with a solo block from senior middle hitter
Ye Wang (Beijing, China/Hachioji Jissen). Daemen continued to impress by sustaining the lead until the middle of the game when the Knights would gain control with a kill by Sarah Rosa. Bridgeport would go on to win three straight points to control the set with a lead of 18-14 and continue with another two point spurt to have a demanding five point lead. The Knights would go on to win 25-19 with an ace from Katarina Krstonosic.
Ashley Drzymala (West Seneca, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) put up impressive numbers with 14 kills, and ten digs. This is the 21 match that she had led this season. This game will mark the 16 time she had put up double-double efforts in the last 18 games. Amber Dryzmala (West Seneca, N.Y./St. Mary'f of Lancaster) was able to put down eight kills and pick up eight digs while adding an ace and three blocks.
Katie McKrell (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) led the team with 23 assists while Wang chipped in with four kills and three blocks.
Krstonosic led the Knights with 11 kills while Sarah Rosa was right behind with 10 of her own. Ellie Rich tallied 34 assists on the day while Amelie Guinci picked up 14 digs.
Daemen will continue ECC competition at home in the Lumsden Gymnasium on Tuesday, October 20 at 7:00 p.m. in a match up against Roberts Wesleyan College.
