Volleyball Leaves Michigan With Loss

Box Score ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Daemen College volleyball team ran into a buzz-saw this afternoon in the form on Concordia University (Ore.), falling 3-0 (15-25, 15-25, 12-25) to the newest member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in both teams' final match of the Grand Valley State Laker Riverfront Classic held at Fieldhouse Arena.

The loss was Daemen's second of the day after falling 3-0 earlier to Quincy University.  The Wildcats now sit at 1-3 on the young season after splitting a pair of matches yesterday (3-0 loss to Lock Haven University; 3-1 win over Bemidji State University).

Concordia, a NCAA Division II candidacy member, completed an impressive weekend sweep with its win over Daemen.  In addition to knocking off the Wildcats, Concordia clipped Quincy (3-0), Ohio Dominican University (3-1), and the tournament host GVSU Lakers (3-1) who entered the season ranked No. 7 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) preseason national poll.

Concordia attacked at a .304 clip against the Wildcats this afternoon, putting down 31 kills in 69 attempts while committing just 10 attack errors.  The Cavaliers were paced by the eight kills of Colby Barnette while Tori Johnson (seven kills), Lindsey Dorsey (six kills) and Ashley Jibby (five kills) combined for 18 kills.  The quartet of Cavalier hitters were aided by setter Jenessa Taylor who totaled 23 assists.

Daemen's offense sputtered with more errors (23) than kills (21) in the match.  Concordia was strong defensively at the net, recording 12 blocks.

Senior middle blocker Ye Wang (Beijing, China/Hachioji Jissen) paced Daemen with seven kills while sisters Ashley Drzymala (West Seneca, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) and Amber Drzymala (West Seneca, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) combined for 11.  Setter Katie McKrell (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) chipped in with 20 assists.

Trailing 16-11 in the opening set, Daemen surrendered six-straight points as the Cavaliers opened up a double-figure lead at 22-11.  Daemen would draw within eight at 22-14 and 23-15, but the Cavaliers won the final two points, closing out the set on a kill by Johnson.

It was a 9-1 Cavalier run in the second set that turned a manageable 15-11 deficit, into an insurmountable 24-12 lead.  Daemen rallied for three-straight, including a service ace from Amber Drzymala, but Johnson answered again with a set-closing kill.

Concordia jumped out to a 17-8 lead in the third, and would go on to end the set and the match on a service ace by Barnette.

Daemen will look to right the ship when it returns to early-season tournament play next weekend (September 11-12) at the Charger Invitational hosted by University of New Haven.  Look for a full tournament preview later in the week at daemenwildcats.com.
