Wildcats Rock Long-Time Rivals 3-1 In ECC Action

AMHERST, N.Y. – The Daemen College women's volleyball team ousted long-time rival, Roberts Wesleyan College in four sets in East Coast Conference action.  The Wildcats topped the Redhawks 25-17, 18-25, 25-22, 25-17.  Today's match marked the 26th time the two teams have faced off since 2005, with the win, Daemen tied the all-time series 13-13.
 
The results today drive Daemen to 10-6 overall and 4-1 in the ECC, Roberts falls to 6-8 overall and 3-2 in the league.
 
Senior Amber Drzymala (West Seneca, N.Y. / St. Mary's of Lancaster) surpassed 1000 career digs in today's victory.  She posted her sixth double-double of the season, tallying 18 kills and 18 digs, she needed 16 digs to reach this notable mile-stone.  Ashley Drzymala (West Seneca, N.Y. / St. Mary's of Lancaster) and Meghan Ballou (Eden, N.Y. / Eden) recorded 11 kills apiece in the balanced Daemen offense.  ECC Rookie of the Week, Bailey Dolegowski (Marilla, N.Y. / St. Mary's of Lancaster), dished out a match-high 46 assists and added three service aces in the win.
 
Daemen's dominant defensive showing was paced by Kailey Ballou (Eden, N.Y. / Eden) and Alicia Contreras (Arcadia, Calif. / Arcadia), the two registered 13 and 11 digs respectively.  Contreras added five aces, good for the match-high.
 
Roberts Wesleyan's Kate Steger (Hilton, N.Y.), a senior outside hitter, led the Redhawks with eight kills, while Anjali Thomson (Mission Viejo, Calif.) put down a match-high seven blocks.  Setter Elisabeth Rivera (Garden Grove, Calif.) handed out 33 assists and libero Olivia Zureck (Lancaster, N.Y.) had 23 digs in today's loss.
 
The opening set was tied early 2-2, however Daemen would rally off 9 straight points to take the 11-2 lead.  The run was fueled by four service aces from Contreras and two kills by Amber Drzymala.  A kill from Courtney Taylor (Spring, Texas) and two Daemen errors put the Redhawks within six points 22-16.  Yet, the Wildcats proved to be too much, Rachel Stephenson (Hamburg, N.Y. / Frontier) secured the 25-17 win with a big block to end the set.
 
The second set was back-and-fourth action, and the teams found themselves tied 9-9 in the early going.  Roberts scored six consecutive points to take the 15-9 advantage.  The Redhawks used four kills to bolster the run, including two from Alexandre Tahauri (Hesperia, Calif) and a service ace from Shelby Strausbaugh (Alden, N.Y.)  Daemen went on a 8-4 run to fight back within two points (17-19), but would never catch Roberts.  RWC used three Daemen mistakes and two service aces to take the second set 25-18. 
 
The third set was a battle from the start, the two teams traded points throughout the whole game, tying on 10 different occasions.  Daemen notched four points to break the score at 19, which included two kills from Amber Dryzmala and two blocks from Meghan Ballou to take the 22-19 lead.  The Wildcats were able to hold on and take the frame 25-22.
 
The fourth and final set began in similar back-and-fourth fashion with the two squads tied at 11.  A service ace from Contreras, sandwiched by kills from Meghan Ballou and Amber Drzymala made it 14-11 Daemen.  The Redhawks would never narrow the Wildcat lead the rest of the way, Daemen finished the match 25-17.
 
The Wildcats are on the road for four consecutive matches before returning home on October 21.  They travel to face off against ECC foe, Bridgeport, this Sunday, October 9.  Match time is set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
