Daemen Closes Out 2016 With A Commanding Win

The Wildcats finish non-conference action defeating Lake Erie College 73-59

AMHERST, N.Y. – The Daemen College women's basketball team outscored Lake Erie College 20-7 in the fourth quarter, resulting in a 73-59 win today in non-conference action at Lumsden Gymnasium.  
 
The game marked Daemen's last non-conference match-up of the season, and the win snapped a three-game losing streak as the Wildcats improve to 4-8 overall.  Lake Erie, a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), dropped to 4-8 on the year. 
 
Freshman standout Jordan Heinold (Hamburg, N.Y./Immaculata Academy) went 5-for-10 from three-point land and totaled a game-high 18 points to lead the Wildcats.  Heinold netted 12 of Daemen's 28 points in the first half.  Senior Leah McDonell (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Cardinal O'Hara) was the commander of strong second half stampede from the Wildcats.  The 5-foot-6 guard hit 4-of-7 field goal attempts totaling 13 points in the second half and added six rebounds.  Junior Sarah Saba (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) also netted 13 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. 
 
Freshman duo Carina Pringle (Rochester, N.Y. /Greece Athena) and Sydney Jones (Clifton Springs, N.Y./Midlakes), along with senior Natalie Galus (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) each chipped in eight points in today's victory.  Jesse DeWaters (Lockport, N.Y./Niagara Country CC) produced an all-around solid performance, finishing with eight rebounds, five points, and five assists.
 
Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio) paced the Storm with a team-high 15 points, the junior guard surpassed 1000 career points in her performance today. Senior guard Brianna Shagovac (Lorain, Ohio) went 8-of-10 from the charity stripe, and finished the game with 14 points.  Junior center Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, and added eight points and two blocks in the losing effort. 
 
Heinold opened the first quarter with back-to-back threes to give Daemen the quick 6-0 lead.  The Storm responded with their own six-point run to even the score in the early going, netting two jumpers and a lay-up.  The two teams traded buckets back-and-forth, but Joseph (Solon, Ohio) netted a three-pointer to give the visitors a 21-19 lead to close out the quarter.  The Wildcats connected on 4-of-5 three-point shots, with Heinold having 3-of-4, the freshman finished the first 10 minutes with 10 points. 
 
After trailing 24-21 in the opening minutes of the second quarter, Daemen used a seven-point burst to take a 28-24 lead.  The run included a jumper and lay-up from Saba, capped by three-point bucket by DeWaters.  Daemen outscored LEC 19-7 in the second quarter to take a 10-point lead headed into the half, 38-28.  The Wildcats canned eight unanswered points and didn't allow Lake Erie a score in the final 3 minutes of play.  Jones added six of the eight points in the run, including a triple as the quarter ended. 
 
LEC remained true to their name, as they "stormed" back in the third quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 24-14.  Gabor scored 11 of her 15 points in the third, her jumper with 4:08 left in the quarter put her over the 1000-point milestone.  Daemen trailed Lake Erie 51-46 with 2:01 left to play in the third.  The Wildcats answered with a 7-2 run, which featured a three-ball and lay-up from McDonell, and a Galus layup to take a slim 53-52 lead headed into the final quarter.
 
Daemen extended their lead 58-52 in the opening minutes of the fourth, and never looked back.  The Wildcats held the Storm to a mere seven points, Lake Erie went 2-for-16 from the field for a slim 12.5 field goal percentage.  Daemen shot 5-for-10 from the field, and 8-for-12 from the free-throw line in the last 10 minutes of play to come away with the victory.
 
Daemen shot 43-percent (24-for-56) from the field, and went 11-for-25 from downtown and made 14-of-22 form the charity strip to finish the game.  LEC shot 34% (21-for-62) from the field, and went 6-for-21 from three-point land and made 11-of-20 free throws.  The Wildcats dominated the Storm on the boards, finishing with a 52-30 edge.  Daemen ousted Lake Erie in every statistical category. 
 
The Wildcats close out their six-game home stand by hosting non-conference opponent Mercy College on Monday (Jan. 2), with tip-off slated for 5:00 p.m.  Followed by playing host to ECC front runner Saint Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday (Jan. 4) at 5:00 p.m.  Wednesday's contest will serve as Daemen FIT Night, join use for a FREE group fitness class before the women's game in the Academic and Wellness Center and learn more about healthy living.  For a complete look at January promotions and events surrounding Daemen basketball games, click HERE.
