CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Daemen College women's volleyball team improved to 6-4 on the 2016 season, beating California University (Pa.) in straight sets. The Wildcats posted a season-high .330 hitting percentage in the non-conference victory (25-20, 33-31, 25-20).
Cal, a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, suffered just their third loss of the year, falling to 7-3 overall.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead by scoring 7 consecutive points to take a commanding 15-6 advantage. The Vulcans would decrease the lead to a slim, four points, but Daemen closed out the set 25-20. The second, marathon set was back and forth action all the way to the thrilling 32-30-point finish. Eight lead changes and 16 ties kept fans on the edge of their seat, the Vulcans finished the set with 20 kills but Daemen stayed steady in the win. The Wildcats took control 18-10 in the final set, Cal strung together seven points to get within two (19-17). However, Daemen remained solid all-around, closing out the set 25-20 to capture the victory.
The last time Daemen won a set with more than 30 points was September 9, 2011 versus Madonna University. The Wildcats captured the first set 34-32, before losing 3-2 to the Crusaders.
The sister duo of
Ashley Drzymala (West Seneca, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) and
Amber Drzymala (West Seneca, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) each finished with double-digit kills. Ashley, the younger Drzymala, posted a match-high 16 kills for a team-high .682 hitting percentage. Amber contributed 10 kills and four key service aces.
Courtney Scanlan (Ellicottville, N.Y./Stony Brook University) and
Courtney Bernard (Lancaster, Ohio/Fairfield Union) added seven kills apiece for a balanced Wildcat offense.
Freshman setter
Bailey Dolegowski (Marilla, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) paced the Daemen attack with 32 assists, she added two service aces and six digs in the win. Libero
Jess Kranz (Depew, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) registered 11 digs to lead the Wildcat defense. Daemen doubled Cal in total digs for the match, and led in every other statistical category.
Cal University was led by sophomore Lois van Schaik (Naarden Natherlands), she posted a team-high nine kills and two service aces. Veteran setter Megan Litoborski (Lemont, Ill.) dished out 29 helpers in a losing effort.
The Wildcats host the Golden Knights of Gannon in non-conference action on Tuesday (September 20) at Lumsden Gymnasium, match start time is 7:00 p.m.
