Women's Cross Country Opens 2016 Season At Le Moyne

The Daemen College women's cross country team opens its 2016 season at the Le Moyne Alumni Short Course Invitational this weekend...this marks the third straight season that Daemen has opened with this event hosted by Le Moyne College

ON THE SIDELINES
Paul Lagno enters his second season as the Head Women's Cross Country Coach at Daemen in 2016...in his first season, Lagno led the Wildcats to a runner-up finish at the East Coast Conference Championship meet, and a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Division II East Regional Championship meet...it was under his guidance that the team broke into the East Regional rankings for the first time, and standout runner Mackenzie Donahue became the first Daemen athlete in any sport to qualify and compete in a national championship event at the Division II level.
   
DAEMEN SCOUTING REPORT
The Wildcats' 2016 roster boasts nine returners, including the team's top four runners from last season, as well as six newcomers...leading the way is undoubtedbly senior Mackenzie Donahue who has already had a storied career for the Wildcats...last season, she set school records on four separate ocassions, and became Daemen's first NCAA Division II national championship qualifier...Donahue was a first-team All-ECC and first-team All-Region performer in 2015, finishing second at the conference championship meet, and fourth at the regional championship meet...at the national championship meet, she finished 69th out of 247 competitors, and first among all ECC runners...also back is senior Hannah Rice who owns the 4K course record at this weekend's venue on the Le Moyne campus...Rice was a second-team All-ECC performer in 2014, but missed the conference championship meet last season with an injury...she returned at the regional championship meet and finished 38th...senior Brittany Denton and junior Amy Trabert also return after earning second-team All-ECC honors a season ago...Ashley Cheff returns to the team after a one-year hiatus as well...Cheff also competes for the Daemen women's triathlon team...Donahue and Cheff are both not expected to compete this weekend...Daemen was picked third in the ECC preseason poll.
   
IN THE RANKINGS
Daemen opens the season ranked No. 3 in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Preseason East Region Rankings...the Wildcats open as the top-ranked ECC team in the poll, bettered by only Northeast-10 Conference affiliates Stonehill College and Assumption College.
