Volleyball Sweeps Molloy In First ECC Contest

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – The Daemen College women's volleyball team cruised to their first East Coast Conference win of the 2016 season.  The Wildcats defeated Molloy College at Quealy Gymnasium in straight sets (25-19, 25-14, 25-16). Today's win moves Daemen to 7-5 overall and 1-0 in the ECC.

The two teams have faced off eight times in four years, Daemen now leads the all-time series 6-2.  With the loss Molloy drops to 2-12 overall and 0-1 in ECC action.

Daemen had team-best productions in both errors and hitting percentage in today's victory.  The Wildcats recorded single digit errors (9) for the first time this season and posted a .354 hitting percentage.

Courtney Bernard (Lancaster, Ohio / Fairfield Union) paved the way for the Wildcats with 8 kills, good for a season-high .800 hitting percentage.  She had 10 attacks for eight kills with no errors.  Bernard surpassed the 100-kill marker this season after today's win.  She entered the contest with 97 kills, increasing her season-total to 105.

Outside hitter Courtney Scanlan (Ellicottville, N.Y. / Stony Brook University) also reached the 100-kill club today, hammering down eight kills in the Wildcat win.  ECC Player of the Week, Amber Drzymala (West Seneca, N.Y. / St. Mary's of Lancaster) contributed with a match-high nine kills.  Setter of the Week, Bailey Dolegowski (Marilla, N.Y. / St. Mary's of Lancaster) paced the offense with 20 assists and added a season-high five service aces.

Daemen doubled up Molloy 14-7 in the opening set, then again 22-12 on a service ace by Dolegowski.  The Lions rallied off six straight points to cut the Wildcat's lead 24-19.  But it wasn't enought, Daemen capitalized on a Molloy error to close out the first set.  Bernard led the offense with 4 kills in the beginning game.

In the second set the Wildcats busted out to a 4-0 lead off of consecutive kills from Amber Drzymala and Scanlan.  Daemen remained steady all around, only committing two errors to cruise to 20-13 lead.  The Lions were unable to close the gap and never led in the second set.  Kailey Ballou (Eden, N.Y. / Eden) served the final four points to seal the deal, 25-19.

In the final set, Molloy jumped out to a 9-6 lead, fueled by senior Danielle Williams's (Alba, Texas) two kills.  However, Daemen would put on the pressure and retake the lead 13-9 off of four consecutive service aces by Dolegowski.  The Wildcats never looked back, winning effortlessly 25-16, Daemen led in every statistical category.

The Lions were led by Williams who registered a team-high eight kills, and first-year Sophia Smith (Georgetown, Texas) who tallied a match-high 22 assists.

Daemen begins a three-match homestand by hosting 2015 East Region champion N.Y. Institute of Technology on Saturday, Oct. 1.
