Daemen Sweeps Through Second Day At Ram Fest Tournament

Wildcats' Two Wins Includes Five-Set Thriller Over Millersville

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - The Daemen College women's volleyball team picked up a pair of wins today to closeout their participation in Ram Fest, a multi-team tournament hosted by West Chester University.  The Wildcats downed Philadelphia University in four sets (22-25, 25-18, 25-16, 25-22) in the day's opener, before besting Millersville University in a five-set thriller (25-17, 22-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-12).

The results today push Daemen to 3-1 on the young season.

Against Philadelphia, a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference affiliate, the Wildcats hit their way to a 10-kill advantage (51-41) and limited the Rams to an attack percentage of just .109.

Amber Drzymala (West Seneca, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) paced the Wildcat offense with 14 kills while Courtney Scanlan (Ellicottville, N.Y./Stony Brook University) and Courtney Bernard (Lancaster, Ohio/Fairfield Union) chipped in with 13 kills apiece - a career-high for the latter.

Freshman setter Bailey Dolegowski (Marilla, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) registered her second double-double of the season with match-highs of 39 assists and 20 digs, while also posting four service aces.  Classmate Jess Kranz (Depew, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) chipped in defensively with 13 digs.

Philly's Courtney Wensel, a sophomore outside hitter, paced the Rams with 11 kills and 14 digs, but she committed 10 hitting errors to end the match with an attack percentage of just .020.  Alexandra Harrington (St. Leonard, Md.) posted 33 assists in a losing effort for the Rams.

After dropping the opening set, Daemen rebounded to win three straight and take the match.  It began in the second as back-to-back kills by Scanlan and Bernard put the Wildcats ahead 19-13.  The Rams would get it back to a four-point deficit on two ocassions but never any closer.

In the third set, Daemen used a 6-1 spurt to turn a slim 12-11 lead into an insurmountable six-point bulge (18-12).  Drzymala registered a kill and a service ace in the run.  The lead would balloon to as many as eight points later in the set before a Dolegowski service ace ended the frame.

The Wildcats closed things out in the fourth set.  Kills from Drzymala and freshman Cristina Apostol (Bucharest, Romania/Targu Mures) were sandwiched around a pair of PU attack errors in a 4-0 spurt which put Daemen ahead 20-15.  Daemen would extend to a 23-17 lead following another Drzymala kill before her sister, Ashley Drzymala ended the set and the match with her eighth kill for point No. 25.

In their tournament capper against Millersville, Daemen dominated in nearly every statistical category, including a 69-48 edge in kills and an 82-69 advantage in digs.

The Wildcats attacked at a .297 clip to take the opening set, 25-17.  Millersville held early leads of 9-4 and 11-8, but, after knotting the score at 14-14, Daemen won 11 of the next 14 points.

Millersville, a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, battled back with wins in the second and third sets before Daemen rallied for the match victory.

The Wildcats rattled off six straight points to stave off defeat in the fourth set, breaking a 19-19 tie and forcing a fifth set.  Amber Drzymala recorded a pair of kills and Dolegowski had a service ace in the run.

The deciding set went back and forth early, until Daemen scored four straight points to break an 8-8 tie.  The Marauders would pull within two on three ocassions - 12-10, 13-11, 14-12 - but couldn't get over the hump as Ashley Drzymala delivered the final point for the Wildcats.

Amber Drzymala posted 21 kills and 21 digs for the second 20-20 game of her career.  The effort also marked her first double-double of the year and the 17th of her career.

Bernard matched her career-high total from earlier in the day with 13 kills, while Scanlan and Ashley Drzymala split 24 kills between them.  Ashley added 10 digs for her 14th career double-double.  Dolegowski also doubled up again, doling out a career-best 58 assists while digging out 12 balls.  Kranz added a career-best 25 digs as well.

The Marauders were paced by junior middle hitter Kelsi Ceriani (Dillsburg, Pa.) with 17 kills.  Junior outside hitter Erin Harman (Hanover, Pa.) chipped in with 13 kills.

Sophomore setter Grace Dawson (Collegeville, Pa.) dished out 39 assists and freshman Katie Laughman (New Oxford, Pa.) posted a team-high 22 digs.

The wins today moved Daemen to 9-3 in three all-time appearances at Ram Fest.

Daemen now returns home to host next weekend's Daemen College/Hyatt Place Volleyball Classic, a tournament which will feature six teams and 12 total matches over three days (Sept. 9-11).  The Wildcats kick things off by facing Slippery Rock University next Friday, September 9 at 1 p.m.
