Daemen Races Past UDC For Second Straight Win

Wildcats Post Largest Margin Of Victory Since Joining East Coast Conference

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's basketball team placed five players in double figures and enjoyed a season-best 50 percent field goal shooting while running away with an 85-56 victory over visiting University of the District of Columbia in East Coast Conference action today at Lumsden Gymnasium.

The win moves Daemen to 7-11 overall and 4-6 in league play this season.  The Wildcats, who are now 4-1 at home since Dec. 31, were coming off an 88-80 victory over rival Roberts Wesleyan College earlier this week.  The offensive production today put Daemen over 80 points in back-to-back games for the first time since early January 2014, and it delivered the Wildcats' first victory against the Firebirds in eight all-time meetings, including a two-point loss (56-54) in our nation's capital last month.

UDC, which has averaged 22 wins over the last three seasons, fell to 2-18 overall and 1-9 in ECC play with the loss this afternoon.  First-year head coach Juan Dixon, the former University of Maryland star and NBA veteran, had just six players available for the contest today.

Senior guard Leah McDonell (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Cardinal O'Hara) led the Wildcats' balanced scoring effort with a game-high 14 points while adding seven rebounds, three steals and two assists.  Junior guard Sarah Saba (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) narrowly missed a double-double with 12 points and nine boards.

A trio of double-figure scorers came off the bench for coach Jenepher Banker today, led by sophomore forward Erin Egan (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) who canned 6-of-8 field goal attempts for a career-high 13 points while adding five rebounds.  Junior forward Liz Miles (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) hit on 4-of-6 shots and totaled a season-high 11 points to go with eight rebounds.  And, senior guard Rachel Pawlak (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield) connected on three shots from three-point range for the second time this season as part of a 10-point outing.  The trio of Wildcat reserves helped Daemen outscore the short-handed Firebirds 43-13 off the bench.

Junior guard Kaiya Coleman (Laurel, Md.), the lone reserve for UDC today, led the Firebirds with 13 points and nine rebounds.  Freshman guards Kaylah Cooper (Dover, Del.) and Tyra Coombs (Mechanicsville, Md.) also reached double figures for UDC today, scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively.  Fellow freshmen Bailee White (Silver Spring, Md.) and Bianca White (Silver Spring, Md.) added nine point apiece, but they combined to shoot just 8-for-32 from the field (2-for-14 from three-point range).

UDC opened the scoring with a Bianca White jumper, but Saba answered with a three-pointer on the next Daemen possession and the Wildcats never trailed for the remainder of the contest.

After taking a 22-14 lead to end the first quarter, Daemen scored 11 of the final 16 points in the second to establish a 38-25 halftime edge.  Egan sparked the spurt with seven points, including five in the final 38 seconds which featured the first three-pointer of her career.  The Wildcats knocked down six three-pointers in the half while also outscoring the guests 14-0 in the paint and 10-1 in second chance points.  UDC was limited to just 23.7 percent shooting (9-for-38), including a chilly 4-for-17 from three-point land (23.5 percent).

The Wildcats stormed out of the locker room at halftime, opening up a 23-point gap (48-25) by scoring the first 10 points of the third quarter.  The spurt paved the way for a 27-14 advantage in the period as the lead swelled to 26 points (65-39) on Egan's layup just before the quarter expired.

In the fourth, UDC never got closer than 22 points.  Daemen extended the lead to its widest margin, 78-49, on a layup by freshman guard Alexis Perdue (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) at the 4:21 mark.  With UDC trailing by 22 later in the period, Daemen closed the game on a 7-0 run with Miles accounting for all seven points.

Daemen shot 33-for-66 from the field while limiting UDC to 28.2 percent shooting (20-for-71), thanks in part to a season-high 11 blocks - four from Natalie Galus (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier), three from Miles and two each from Egan and Saba.

The Wildcats canned 10-of-26 from three-point range, marking the fourth time this season they have made double-figure trifectas in a game.  After shooting just 5-for-39 (12.8 percent) from long distance in a pair of road losses last week, the Wildcats are now 22-for-52 (42.3 percent) in the last two games.

The 29-point margin of victory is the most for Daemen in an ECC game since joining the league for the 2013-14 season, and the widest overall since a 98-36 drubbing of the University of Maine-Fort Kent on Feb. 27, 2013.

Daemen closes out this current three-game home stand by hosting Long Island University Post on Wednesday, Jan. 25.  The Wildcats will be looking to avenge a 69-59 loss to the Pioneers in their ECC season opener back on Nov. 30.  Tip-off Wednesday is set for 4 p.m.
