Daemen Falls In Straight-Sets To Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Daemen College women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to host Bridgeport in East Coast Conference action, today at Harvey Hubbell Gymnasium.  The Purple Knights ousted the Wildcats 25-19, 25-21, 25-10.
 
With the loss, Daemen drops to 9-11 on the season with a 5-3 conference mark.  Daemen defeated Bridgeport 3-2 in their first meeting of the season.  Bridgeport's pivotal victory moved the Purple Knights to 9-11 overall and 5-3 in the ECC.  After the match today, the teams are currently tied for fourth place in the conference standings.
 
Meghan Ballou (Eden, N.Y. / Eden), Courtney Scanlan (Ellicottville, N.Y. / Stony Brook University) and Cristina Apostol (Bucharest, Romania / Targu Mures) all registered seven kills to lead the Wildcat attack. Ballou and Apostol each added two assists in the loss.  Senior Katie McKrell guided the Daemen offense with 28 assists, while adding seven digs and two blocks.
 
Defensively, Ali Greenwood (North Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) led the way with eight digs.  East Coast Conference Women's Volleyball Rookie of the Week, Georgia Wicker (Woodstock, Ill. / Woodstock), notched seven digs and added one service ace in today's loss.  Freshman Jenn Heritz (Granger, Ind. / Penn) posted two blocks up front for the Wildcats and added six kills.
 
Bridgeport posted an impressive .375 attack percentage for the match, and a game-high 7 blocks en route to the sweep.  Senior Bruna Santos (Curitiba, Brazil) and sophomore Emily Burford (Albuquerque, N.M.) tallied a match-high 10 kills to pace the Bridgeport offense.  Junior setter Ellie Rich (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) dished out a game-high 33 assists, while freshman libero Olivia Storaci (Longmont, Colo. / Longmont) registered 10 of the team's 37 digs. 
 
Daemen evened the score 11-11 in the opening set after kills from Apostol and Heritz.  The Purple Knights outscored the Wildcats 6-4 to take the 17-14 advantage, forcing DC to call a timeout.  The Wildcats were unable to catch the host team, who took the first set 25-19. 
 
The Wildcat's best frame of the contest was the second set, the team registered 16 kills for a game high .333 attack percentage.  The game began in similar fashion with the two sides trading points early, finding themselves tied at 5.  Daemen used a five-point run on the serve of Kailey Ballou (Eden, N.Y. / Eden) to take a 10-5 lead.  The Purple Knights recaptured the lead (13-11) after a five-point burst.  The set continued in see-saw action with the teams tied 18-18, before Bridgeport held a 22-20 advantage.  Daemen called a timeout but committed a few errors and was unable to halt the home team.  UB scored four of the final five points, winning the second frame 25-21. 
 
In the third and final set, Bridgeport jumped out to a quick 11-4 lead.  Freshman Allison Post ( Windsor, California / Windsor) nailed down a kill to push the Wildcats to 5 points.  The Purple Knights outscored Daemen 9-4, widening the gap 18-9.  A Bridgeport service error gave the Wildcats their final point of the night (18-10), but the Purple Knights clinched the set and match after scoring the final seven points of the game, winning 25-10.

Daemen continues ECC road action tomorrow afternoon at Mercy College, game time is 1:00p.m.  The Wildcats face off against the Mavericks for the second time this season, DC swept Mercy in straight-sets in their first meeting.
