For Communications Women's Tennis Falls At Division I Niagara NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. - Playing a dual-match against an NCAA Division I opponent for the first time this season, the Daemen College women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to Niagara University this afternoon at the NU Tennis Courts on Monteagle Ridge. The loss snapped Daemen's modest two-match winning streak and dropped the Wildcats' record to an even 6-6 this season. Niagara, a member of the NCAA Division I Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, improved to 2-0 on the season with its second defeat of an NCAA Division II team this week. The Purple Eagles opened the dual-match portion of their 2017-18 schedule with a 4-3 defeat of Walsh University last Sunday, Oct. 1. The match opened with Niagara sweeping through doubles competition to earn the one point awarded under Division I scoring. Freshmen Lorissa Yuen (Portland, Ore.) and Giovanna Paschoalin (Sao Caetano Do Sul, Brazil) made their fifth appearance of the season atop the Wildcats' doubles lineup, but fell 6-1 to NU's tandem of seniors Sharlee Deshmukh (Pune, India) and Stella Peisakhova (Odessa, Ukraine). Daemen veterans Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) fell 6-2 in second doubles to Andreea Peteu (Bucharest, Romania) and Shannon Wong (Baie Du Tombeau, Mauritius). And NU completed the sweep with a 6-3 win by Ali Hutchinson (Austin, Texas) and Alexandra Whitney (Lewiston, N.Y.) in third doubles over DC's Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) and Morgan Park (Hamburg, N.Y.). The Purple Eagles continued to rattle off points as the match shifted to singles play. Yuen, going for her 10th singles win of the season, battled in the top spot of the lineup, but fell 6-3, 6-4 to Peisakhova, who entered her final collegiate campaign with 37 singles wins in her career. Daemen's best chance to pick up a point came in fourth singles where Ringler battled Deshmukh to a three-set affair. The Niagara senior emerged with the win, however, 6-1, 6-7, 1-0. Additional singles results today included: No. 2: Peteu defeated Paschoalin (6-1, 6-1) No. 3: Wong defeated Stasiuk (6-3, 6-1) No. 5: Hutchinson defeated Robins (6-1, 6-0) No. 6: Whitney defeated Park (6-0, 6-0) Daemen was seeking its first-ever win against an NCAA Division I opponent. The Wildcats are 0-4 all-time in such matches. Daemen returns to non-conference play Tuesday, Oct. 10 with a dual-match at Millersville University out of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. A planned match at Shippensburg University for Monday, Oct. 9 has been preemptively cancelled due to the expected weather forecast.
