The loss today was Daemen's second consecutive defeat in as many days, dropping to 7-10 overall and 3-2 in the conference. LIU Post, who was slotted fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll, improved to 17-3 overall with a 4-1 league mark. The Pioneers have now won eight straight matches with their last loss coming at the hands of the Molloy Lions. Outside hitters Meghan Ballou (Eden, N.Y. / Eden) and Courtney Scanlan (Ellicottville, N.Y. / Stony Brook University), and middle hitter Cristina Apostol (Bucharest, Romania / Targu Mures) combined for 29 of the Wildcats' 44 kills in the match. Meghan Ballou notched a match-high 14 kills, while Scanlan and Apostol registered 8 and 7 kills respectively. Ballou and Scanlan also added six digs apiece in the loss. Daemen's defense was once again led by rookie libero Georgia Wicker (Woodstock, Ill. / Woodstock), Wicker was the only Wildcat to collect double-digit digs with 14. She also tallied a team-high two service aces and added four assists. Senior setter Katie McKrell (Webster, N.Y. / Webster Schroeder) delivered a match-high 26 assists and posted eight digs. Junior Kailey Ballou (Eden, N.Y. / Eden) rounded out Daemen's defensive effort with seven digs. The Pioneers jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the opening set, and used another three-point spurt to take their biggest lead of the game 14-5. However, the Wildcats outscored NYIT 9-4 to close the gap 14-18. Daemen scored five-straight in the catch-up, which included two kills from Scanlan and a kill from both Allison Post and Meghan Ballou. The Wildcats were unable to erase the four-point deficit and dropped the opening game 19-25. The teams traded points early in game one and the Pioneers took control 12-8 after breaking an 8-8 tie. The two squads continued to exchange points throughout the frame, but the Wildcats regained the lead 22-19 after a five-point burst on the serve of Wicker. LIU Post responded with their own four-point spurt, stealing the lead 24-23. The Pioneers outscored the Wildcats 3-1 in the extra action, winning the marathon set 27-25. The Pioneers scored the first four points of the third set, which included two Wildcat mistakes. The Wildcats rebounded after being down four early to even the score 7-7, which included kills from Ballou, Apostol, McKrell and Abby Francis. The squads found themselves tied ten more times, ultimately notched at 22 apiece, but LIU Post totaled the final three points of the set, winning 25-22. Rachel Londot (Utica, Ohio) paced LIU Post, doubling up with 13 kills and 17 digs in the sweep, while Danielle Valenza (Hauppauge, N.Y.) notched 10 kills and 9 digs. Giulia Genna (Rome, Italy) and Kassie Akouri-Tejedor (North Miami Beach, Fla.) combined for 32 of the Pioneers' assists. Up next, Daemen hosts Molloy and Queens College Oct. 13 and 14 in East Coast Conference action. The Wildcats and Lions face off in afternoon matinee at 2:00 p.m. in Lumsden Gymnasium on Friday.
