AMHERST, N.Y. – Senior Ellie Leszyk (Horseheads, N.Y.) scored a career-high 21 points and sophomore McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y.) added 20 points to lead Le Moyne College to a 67-55 victory over Daemen College here today in women's basketball action.
Le Moyne, a member of the Northeast-10 Conference, evened its record at 3-3, while Daemen dropped to 2-4 following its fourth-straight loss.
A sluggish start by Daemen proved to be too much for the Wildcats this afternoon, as the hosts connected on just 3-of-10 shots during the first quarter and entered the second quarter trailing 20-8. Le Moyne made 7-of-15 shots during the opening ten minutes, including 5-of-7 from downtown.
Sophomore Jordan Heinold (Hamburg, N.Y./Immaculata Academy) paced the Wildcats, as she drilled a career-high six three-pointers and finished with 20 points (one shy of her career high) and a career-high five assists. Senior Sarah Saba (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) and sophomore Sydney Jones (Clifton, N.Y./Midlakes) helped the Daemen cause with 10 points each. Saba also collected four rebounds in the game, including the 600th of her career. Sophomore point guard Carina Pringle (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) returned to action after missing the last two games and contributed five assists.
Leszyk, who scored 15 of her 21 points after halftime, connected on 6-of-9 shots overall and was good on 4-of-7 from three-point land. Roberts, the NE-10 Rookie of the Year last season, played all 40 minutes and also dished out a team-high six assists. Senior Courtney Webster (Doylestown, Pa.) added 13 points and seven rebounds for the visitors.
Both teams struggled to score early in the game and Le Moyne held a 9-8 lead with just under three minutes left in the first quarter when a three-pointer by Roberts sparked the Dolphins on a quarter-ending 11-0 run. Roberts scored the first eight points of the run, and a three-pointer by Leszyk with 22 seconds left in the quarter capped the run and gave the visitors a 20-8 lead after the first frame.
The Le Moyne lead was 14 points, 24-10, three and a half minutes into the second quarter when Daemen got back into the game with a 10-0 run. Two three-pointers by Heinold highlighted the spurt. Le Moyne regrouped following a timeout and quickly regained a nine-point advantage following a jumper by Webster and a three-pointer by Roberts. The Dolphins took a 32-24 lead into halftime.
The start of the second half saw the teams combine for just one field goal each over the first two minutes of the third quarter, before the pace picked up during a three minute span midway through the frame. Le Moyne outscored the Wildcats 9-8 during that flurry and took a 43-34 lead following a jumper by Leszyk with 4:29 left in the third quarter. The teams went scoreless for the next two minutes, and then traded baskets the rest of the frame. Another clutch three-pointer by Leszyk, this time with just six seconds left in the quarter, gave LC a 48-40 lead.
Daemen opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer by Heinold, but the Dolphins outscored the Wildcats 8-3 over the next two minutes and the visitors regained a double-digit lead, 56-46, following a layup by Leszyk with 7:56 left to play. The lead was nine points, 60-51, when Leszyk was fouled while attempting a three-pointer and made all of the ensuing three free throws to give LC a 63-51 lead with 2:40 to play. The Dolphins maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
Daemen shot 39-percent (20-for-52) from the field overall and went 9-of-22 (41%) from three-point land. Daemen entered the game ranked first among East Coast Conference teams in three-pointers made and attempted per game. The Wildcats attempted 10 free throws and made six. LC shot 47-percent (23-49) from the field overall and canned 9-of-16 three-pointers. The Dolphins went a perfect 12-for-12 from the charity stripe. Daemen finished with a slim 31-28 edge in total rebounds.
The Wildcats close out their three-game home stand Tuesday (Nov. 28) when they host Gannon University in a non-league game.
