With the win, the Wildcats improved to 4-9 this season. St. Michael's, an affiliate of the Northeast-10 Conference, fell to 5-7 on the season. Daemen has now prevailed in two of the four all-time meetings with the Purple Knights. Three Wildcats scored in double digits to lead a balanced attack. Senior Sarah Saba (Lancaster, N.Y.) led the way with her fourth double-double of the season, pouring in 22 points and ripping down 11 rebounds, while sophomore Carina Pringle (Rochester, N.Y.) netted 16 points and redshirt freshman Tiara Filbert (Batavia, N.Y.) notched 14. With 22 points today, Saba is now just four-points shy of moving into sixth place on the Daemen women's basketball all-time scoring list. With her career total sitting at 1,490 points, Saba needs just 10 points to become the sixth player in team history to register 1,500 points. The veteran guard continues to dominate on both ends for the Wildcats. In addition to her double-double performance she added four blocks, two steals, and one assist, and she now ranks first in the ECC with 17.9 points per game this season. Saba has now scored at least 10 points in 12-straight contests, making it her fifth 20-point game of the season, and 27th of her career. Pringle, Daemen's commanding floor general in today's victory, reached a career-high with 16 points. Her performance marked the first time since she had reached double figures since Feb. 2, 2017. The sharpshooter went 5-of-8 from the field (63%) and 1-of-2 from beyond the three-point arc, while adding four steals and three assists in a team-high 38 minutes of action. Since being inserted into the starting lineup, Filbert has posted 9.4 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, a significant increase from the 6.5 points and 3.0 rebounds per game she registered off the bench during the first eight games of the season. Two of the Wildcats' four wins have come in the five-game streak when Filbert is one of the starting five. On top of her 14 points, she was a force on the boards with seven rebounds. In the first half, the Wildcats had the hot hand, going 15-of-31 (48.4%) from the field and 5-of-11 (45.5%) from three-point range. Junior forward Erin Egan (Williamsville, N.Y.) had an outstanding first half with nine points. Despite being beat on the boards 21-15, Daemen held the Purple Knights to just 1-of-5 from beyond the arc. The Wildcats began the second half with a narrow 35-32 advantage after trading buckets in the first 20 minutes of action. The Wildcats used an eight-point terror to widen their lead in the opening minutes of the second half. The run included buckets from Saba, Pringle, and sophomore Sarah Young (Depew, N.Y.). St. Michael's didn't get on the board until the 6:11 mark in the third quarter. While the Wildcat offense continued to roll, their commitment to defense was vital in their victory. Daemen held the hosts to just eight points in the fourth quarter, the Purple Knights' sole quarter with single-digit scoring. St. Michael's went a dismal 8-of-28 from the field and 0-of-8 from three-point range. Daemen went on to win the game 69-56, ending the year on a high note with strong hopes for the rest of the 2018 campaign. The Wildcats begin the New Year by jumping back in East Coast Conference action against longtime rival Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday, January, 6. Print Friendly Version
