Strong Second Half Lifts Knights Past Wildcats

Sarah Saba competes in her 100th career game

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Sophomore Beth Bonin (Cicero, N.Y.) scored a game-high 20 points, and senior Merrick Rowland (Albany, N.Y.) added 15 points to lead the Queens College women's basketball team to a 70-60 victory over Daemen College today at Fitzgerald Gymnasium in East Coast Conference action.

With the victory, Queens evened its record at 8-8 overall and 4-4 in ECC action, while Daemen dropped to 7-12 overall with a 4-5 conference mark.

A third-quarter surge by the Knights, after an almost deadlocked first half, proved to be too much for the Wildcats this afternoon as the hosts scored 28 points in the opening 10 minutes of second-half action.  All four of the Knight's three-point baskets came in the second half, after shooting 0-for-4 in the first.

Senior Sarah Saba (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) and redshirt-freshman Tiara Filbert (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) scored 17 points apiece to pace the Wildcat attack.  Saba, who played in her 100th career game today, added five rebounds and two blocks in the loss.  In 100 career games, Saba has scored 10 or more points 86 times, and she's gone over 20 points 29 times, her total career points now sit at 1,603.  Filbert connected on 8-for-16 from the field and 1-for-2 from beyond the arc to total 17 points in 33 minutes; 13 of her 17 points came in the second half.  Filbert has reached double figures in seven of the last nine games.  She added eight rebounds, three assists and one steal for a phenomenal showing.

Sophomore Carina Pringle (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) tied her career-high assist number with six while adding seven points.  Sophomore Sarah Young (Depew, N.Y./St. Bonaventure) hauled down eight boards and chipped in seven points and three blocks.

Along with Bonin and Rowland, Marina Ramon Lopez (Ponferrada, Spain) was an offensive machine for the Knights, netting 15 points and collecting a game-high ten rebounds.  Queen scored 22 of their 70 points off Daemen turnovers, while the Wildcats only registered 9 points off of Queen's mistakes.

Both teams put up a defensive battle in the first two quarters of the contest, neither side making it easy for the other to score.  The Wildcats used a 6-0 burst to open the second quarter and take the 16-10 lead with 9:12 left till halftime.  The run included a traditional three-point play by Young followed by a three-ball from Pringle.  The Knights responded, outscoring the Wildcats 11-4 to regain the lead 21-20 at the 3:17 mark.  Both teams continued to battle, with the Wildcats on top by two (28-26) with two quarters left to play.  Both squads struggled to shot in the first; Daemen went 13-for-29 (31.43%) while Queens connected on 12-for-31 (38.71%).

The Wildcats jumped out of the game in the third quarter, taking a 33-28 lead after buckets by Filbert and Saba, but the hosts quickly found their grove evened the score 35-35 with 6:03 to go in the quarter.  Queen's scored 14-consecutive unanswered points, growing their lead 49-35.  The Wildcats were held to a slim 12 points while allowing their opponent 28.

In the final 10 minutes of action, the Wildcats limited the Knights to only 16 fourth-quarter points, while seeing better offensive production themselves, netting 20 points.  Sydney Jones (Clifton, N.Y./Midlakes) laid in one to narrow the deficit to six-points (61-55), however, it was not enough to catch the hosts, who went on to win 70-60.

Daemen shot 37.5-percent (26-for-64) from the field overall and went 5-of-13 from three-point land.  The Wildcats attempted ten free throws and made seven.  QC shot 40-percent (26-for-65) from the field overall and canned 4-of-8 three-points.  The Knights went 14-for-18 (77.8-percent) from the charity stripe.

The Wildcats are idle until next weekend when they host Mercy College (Jan. 26) and the University of Bridgeport (Jan. 28) in ECC games.
