Women's Volleyball Has ECC Win Streak Snapped at NYIT

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The Daemen College women's volleyball team had its nine-match East Coast Conference winning streak snapped this afternoon after a 3-2 defeat (25-21, 25-17, 27-25, 25-17, 15-9) to host New York Institute of Technology at Recreation Hall.

The loss marks Daemen's first conference loss of the season, moving them to 15-10 overall and 9-1 in conference. NYIT improves to 12-12 overall and 4-6 in the conference.

NYIT's Kylee Kanealey and Tiffany Verni led the way with 18 and 17 kills, respectively. Karley Brewster totaled 48 assists from the Bears' setter position.

Sophomore Allison Post (Windsor, Calif.) led the Wildcats with a career-high 22 kills. Junior Meghan Ballou (Eden, N.Y.) registered a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs, and freshman Isa McCaffrey had 55 assists, tying the second-most of her career.

Defensively, Jamie Yonker led the Bears with 25 digs. Verni also registered a double-double. To go along with her 17 kills, she had 20 digs, good for second on the team. Kylee Kenealey posted four blocks for NYIT,

Sophomore Ali Greenwood (North Aurora, Ill.) led the Wildcats with a career-high 33 digs, while classmate Georgia Wicker (Woodstock, Ill.) recorded 23, one shy of her season-high. Post also contributed defensively with six blocks.

The first set went in favor of the Bears 25-21 after the set went back and forth all the way up to 19-19. NYIT then rattled off four straight points to put them up 23-19 and eventually win the set.

The Wildcats bounced back in the second set coming up with an eight-point run to go up 14-8. The Wildcats held off the Bears to win 25-17.

The third set was taken by the Bears after a battle between both teams. After the teams traded runs, they eventually sat square at 25-25 for the next two-point leader to take the set. NYIT won the two points in a row to win 27-25.

The fourth set was taken by the Wildcats after multiple three- and four-point runs. The Wildcats won 25-17 leveling the match at two sets apiece and forcing a fifth and deciding set.

The fifth set, that is played to 15, looked to be in a favor of the Wildcats after going up 7-4 until NYIT took a timeout. After the timeout, the Bears rattled off five straight points forcing the Wildcats to call a timeout of their own. While the timeout initially helped for one point, NYIT then won four straight points to go up 13-8. Daemen won the next point, followed by NYIT winning the final two points to finish the set 15-9 and the match 3-2.

The Wildcats held the advantage in points (85-70), kills (70-57), blocks (10-7), assists (66-54) and digs (106-97). However, the Wildcats committed 27 errors compared to the Bears' 18.

Despite the loss, the Wildcats remain in first place in the ECC standings, one game up on Molloy College. The Wildcats entered Sunday's match with a chance to clinch a conference tournament berth, but that will have to wait for another day.

The Wildcats have four games remaining this season, which are all ECC games. Queens College visits Lumsden Gymnasium on Friday, October 26 at 6 p.m. followed by the second-place Molloy Lions on Saturday, October 27 at 1 p.m.
