BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Daemen College women's volleyball team closed out the 2018 regular season this afternoon with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-13) win at East Coast Conference opponent University of Bridgeport.
With the win, the Wildcats sweep the season series against the Purple Knights after doing so in 2016 and splitting in 2017. The Wildcats clinched the outright season title after yesterday's win at Mercy College, and they'll finish the regular season with a 13-1 ECC record and 19-10 overall record. Bridgeport, the number nine ranked team in this week's NCAA Division II East Region poll, finishes the regular season at 14-12 overall and 8-6 in the ECC. The Purple Knights clinched their 16th consecutive ECC Championship berth yesterday with a win over Roberts Wesleyan College.
Sophomore
Allison Post (Windsor, Calif.) led the Wildcats offensively with 10 kills and five aces. Sophomore
Georgia Wicker (Woodstock, Ill.) and freshman
Isa McCaffrey (North Royalton, Ohio) each had 17 assists.
The Purple Knights were led by Amanda Keller with 11 kills. Ellie Rich had a team high 16 assists with Carly Killorin contributing with 10.
Defensively, the
Sam Logan (Eden, N.Y.) led the team with 17 digs, while Posted added 14 and
Ali Greenwood (North Aurora, Ill.) had 10. Post was the only player with a double-double in the game.
For Bridgeport, Breanna Jones had 10 digs with Klein Johnson getting nine.
The Wildcats were able to maintain a .250 attacking percentage for the game compared to Bridgeport's .167 percentage. Daemen also led in kills with 43 to Bridgeport's 29.
The first set started with a back-and-forth affair between the two being tied at six points apiece. The Wildcats then ripped off a six-point run followed by a three-point run to go up 18-9. Bridgeport was then able to close the gap scoring on nine of the next 11 points making it 20-18. However, the Wildcats put together a two-point and three-point run to stop the Purple Knights' comeback in the first set winning 25-20.
The second set proved to be another battle for both teams with each putting on big run. Bridgeport got down 11-6 early, but then had a five-point run to close the score gap. With consistent scoring, Daemen was able to win the second set 25-21.
The third set was dominated by the Wildcats after an early six-point run to go up 7-1. Daemen then pulled off a five-point run to go up 17-7. The Wildcats were able to hold off Bridgeport by around 10 points the whole set.
Daemen did not trail in any of the three sets.
The two teams will face off again in the ECC Championship semifinals on Friday, November 9 at 6 p.m. Daemen is the No. 1 seed and Bridgeport is the No. 4 seed. The tournament will be hosted by Daemen at Lumsden Gymnasium.
