From the desk of the Interim Director of Athletics…

Happy Spring Wildcat Fans!

As we move into our spring sport seasons here at Daemen College, I am reminded, thanks to NCAA March Madness, once again why college athletics is such a wonderful industry to work in and be a part of.

March is the month of underdogs in college basketball. We've watched as Loyola Chicago, a team deemed an underdog, has had great success in the NCAA basketball tournament. While the notion of the underdog is highlighted during the tournament, the characteristics of the underdog - perseverance, tenacity, passion - are the same ones that those of us who work in college athletics see all the time from our student-athletes. They may be highlighted during certain events, but we know that they are integral to our student-athletes' daily training.

Just this past weekend, our bowling student-athletes highlighted these characteristics when they came back from a 3-0 deficit to beat Chestnut Hill College to secure the program's first top-four finish at the East Coast Conference Bowling Championship. Though they did not win the tournament, they showed true perseverance, tenacity and passion during their play. Ultimately, the team posted their best record to date at 35-17...not bad for a team picked to finish ninth in the conference this year.

To continue to highlight and celebrate our student-athletes, we look forward to two traditions every April. On April 5, we will celebrate National Student-Athlete Appreciation Day where we commend our student-athletes for their academic success and community engagement initiatives. Later in the month, we will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Week for the seventh time at Daemen College. Over 30 years ago, the Women's Sport Foundation began this celebration as a way to recognize the achievements of women in sports as well as to pay tribute to those who have paved the way. This event provides Daemen Athletics with an excellent opportunity to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our female student-athletes, athletic trainers, coaches and administrative staff.

Please do not forget that Daemen Day of Giving is fast approaching on April 25. This day provides an opportunity for the community to make an impact in many areas of development at Daemen, athletics included. The success that our bowling team had is just one example of a team that is growing leaps and bounds, and one that needs further resources to continue on its trajectory.

As always Wildcat fans, I thank you for your continued support of Daemen Athletics, and I look forward to providing you with another update on our program next month.
