GREENSBURG, Pa. - The Daemen College women's tennis suffered a 6-1 loss to Seton Hill University here this afternoon. Daemen dropped to 0-3 on the season, while the Griffins improved to 2-1.
Seton Hill, an affiliate of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, took a 1-0 lead in the match after scoring a pair of wins in doubles play to open the match. In a new scoring format for NCAA Division II matches this season, the outcome of doubles matches will award a single point to the team winning at least two of the three matchups, as opposed to awarding points for each individual doubles victory.
Daemen's top duo of Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) suffered a 6-3 loss to SHU's Kaelyn Zak and Jenna Bailey at No. 1 doubles. The hosts secured the doubles point after Ana Salazar and Kaitlyn Walch defeated DC's Courtney Otis (Marcellus, N.Y.) and Alliya Foster (Bronx, N.Y.) at No. 2 doubles by a score of 6-2.
Stasiuk secured Daemen's lone point on the day after dispatching of Bailey at No. 1 singles by a score of 6-2, 6-0. Stasiuk who posted a program-record 18 singles wins last year as a freshman, improved to 2-1 on the year at No. 1 singles this year.
SRU secured the win after posting straight-set wins at No. 2, 3 and 4 singles. The Griffins added points in the fifth and sixth singles positions by default.
Daemen will remain in Pennsylvania and take on Slippery Rock University tomorrow (Sept. 23) at 1 p.m.
