Wildcats Close Fall Season With First-Ever Thruway Rivalry Win

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - A win in the No. 3 singles position by freshman Erica Jasinski (Fairview, Pa.) proved to be the difference as the Daemen College women's tennis team rallied for a 4-3 win over rival Roberts Wesleyan College in East Coast Conference action today. With the dual match squared at 3-3, Jasinski battled out of an 0-3 hole in the third set of her match against Salome Darsalia to win 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, delivering not only the Wildcats' first win of the season, but also their first-ever win in the all-time series with RWC.

Daemen improved to 1-9 overall and 1-4 in ECC play. It marked the Wildcats' first win in ECC play since an 8-1 decision against Molloy College on Sept. 10, 2017. The host Redhakws dropped to 3-7 overall and 0-5 in ECC action this season.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • RWC took a 1-0 lead in the match by winning two of the three doubles matches at the outset. Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) and Lena Gruber (Munich, Germany) teamed up on a 6-2 win in the No. 1 doubles position for Daemen. But the Redhawks responded with wins in the No. 2 position by Laura Freeman and Carolyn Graham (6-3) as well as the No. 3 position by Sophie Farnholz and Charity Hinman (6-4).
  • As play shifted to singles action, RWC went ahead 3-0 with wins in the No. 4 and 6 positions by Graham (6-1, 6-4) and Hinman (6-0, 6-0), respectively.
  • Daemen was able to even things up as Gruber (6-4, 7-6) and Stasiuk (6-4, 6-2) won at the top of the lineup, followed by the first career singles win by freshman Mackenzie Schayes (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.). She defeated Farnholz 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 5 singles position.
  • That set the stage for Jasinski's heroics as she outlasted Darsalia in the pivotal No. 3 position.
