Balanced Attack Lifts Wildcats Over Ravens In Day Two Of The Redhawks Tip-Off Classic

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Graduate student Ashli Jeune (Westhampton, N.J.) paced a balanced attack with 17 points, three rebounds, three assists and five steals to lead the Daemen College women's basketball team to a 65-45 victory over Franklin Pierce University here today in second round action of the Redhawks Tip-Off Classic.

It marked the first-ever meeting between the NCAA Division II programs. The season-opening tournament is being hosted by Roberts Wesleyan College and features teams from the East Coast Conference and the Northeast-10 Conference.

Both teams are now 1-1 on the year. Daemen, which suffered a 77-70 loss to regionally-ranked Stonehill College yesterday, entered the weekend ranked ninth in the NCAA Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) East Region preseason media poll. FPU opened the tournament with a 61-48 win over host Roberts Wesleyan last night.


HIGHLIGHTS

  • Four different players scored in double figures for Daemen, which outscored FPU 36-20 in the second half.
  • Sophomore Katie Titus (Penfield, N.Y.) nearly registered her first double-double of the year, as she finished with 16 points and nine rebounds. Junior Caroline White (Fairport, N.Y.) turned in another solid effort for the Wildcats and finished with 13 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high six assists. It marked her first double-double since her freshman season. Redshirt junior Tiara Filbert (Batavia, N.Y.) added 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
  • Junior guard Sophia Holmes paced the Ravens with a game-high 21 points and six rebounds. Sophomore forward Izzy Lipinski helped the FPU cause with 10 points and three boards.
  • Neither team led by more than five points until early in the second quarter when an 8-0 spurt gave the Wildcats a 23-16 lead. Back-to-back three-pointers by White and Titus capped the run. Daemen later took took its largest lead of the first half, 29-20, following back-to-back layups by White with just over three minutes left before halftime.
  • Daemen went scoreless over the final three minutes of the half and the Wildcats took a 29-25 lead into the break.
  • Both teams struggled to score early in the third quarter and Daemen held a 33-27 lead when the Ravens got a jumper by Lipinski and two free throws by Holmes to make it a two point game (33-31) with 5:33 left in the frame. Daemen used an 8-0 run over the final 1:38 of the third quarter to take a 46-35 lead into the final quarter. Back-to-back triples by Jeune and senior Jordan Heinold (Hamburg, N.Y.) capped the run.
  • The Daemen lead was nine points, 48-39, when a three-pointer by Jeune sparked the Wildcats on a game-clinching 14-2 run. Two free throws by Filbert with 5:01 left capped the run and gave Daemen a 62-41 lead.
  • Daemen shot 41-percent (12-for-29) from the field in the first half and finished 23-for-63 (36.5%) from the field overall. The Wildcats connected on 6-of-22 three-pointers. FPU shot 36-percent (17-for-47) from the field overall and made just 3-of-13 from downtown.
  • Daemen finished with an advantage in points off turnovers (19-7), second chance points (11-2) and points in the paint (24-18).


GAME NOTES

  • It marked the fifth-straight season Daemen has opened the season at a tournament hosted by Roberts Wesleyan.
  • Daemen returns three starters and seven players from last year. The Wildcats are coming off their most successful season since transitioning to NCAA Division II. Daemen posted an 11-game winning streak, won 14 of its final 15 regular-season games, posted a 15-3 league record and finished 18-10 overall.
  • Daemen has forced 40 turnovers and has recorded 14 steals over its first two games.

UP NEXT
Daemen returns to Roberts Wesleyan next weekend (Nov. 15-16) to take part in the Redhawks Alumni Classic. Daemen will face Bloomfield College in the opening round, followed by a matchup with Concordia College in the second round.
