WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senior Erin Egan (Williamsville, N.Y.) scored a career-high 21 points and freshman Katie Titus (Penfield, N.Y.) added 16 points and nine rebounds to lead Daemen College to a 70-60 victory over the University of the District of Columbia here today in East Coast Conference women's basketball action. Daemen, which had an 11 game winning streak snapped Friday night at St. Thomas Aquinas College, improved to 16-9 overall and 13-3 in the ECC. The Wildcats have already posted the most wins in a season since they went 26-7 in 2012-13. UDC suffered its fourth-straight loss and dropped to 9-17 overall and 6-10 in the league.
Daemen maintained its hold on second place in the ECC standings and also secured the No. 2 seed in the upcoming ECC Championship Tournament with the win today. St. Thomas Aquinas claimed the No. 1 seed in the tournament following its 79-58 win over Roberts Wesleyan College today. The ECC Championship features the top six teams in the final league standings. The top two seeds receive a first-round bye. First round games are slated for campus sites on Wednesday, March 6. The semifinals (Saturday, March 9) and finals (Sunday, March 10) will be played at Hubbell Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Bridgeport. Daemen made its first-ever appearance in the six-team tournament last year.
The Wildcats are currently ranked regionally in both the Division II Sports Information Directors Association (D2SIDA) East Region poll and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II East Region poll—coming in at No. 9 in the final D2SIDA regional poll released Feb. 11 and No.10 in the first NCAA regional poll released this past Wednesday.
Egan connected on 6-of-8 shots from the field and also totaled seven rebounds and three assists. Titus made 6-of-11 shots overall and canned four three-pointers. It marks the sixth time this season she has made four or more three-pointers in a game. Junior Jordan Heinold (Hamburg, N.Y.) added 10 points (all in the second half), four rebounds and two steals. Heinold also made two three-pointers and now stands just two shy of 100 triples for her career. Sophomore Caroline White (Fairport, N.Y.) chipped in 10 points and four rebounds off the bench, while junior Ranaveya Richards (Albany, N.Y.) helped the Daemen cause with seven points, four rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Senior Mia-Alexis Lloyd (Woodbridge, Va.) scored 10 points in the first half for UDC and finished with a team-high 18 points. Classmate Natasha Ray (Gambrills, Md.) added 12 points and four assists.
Daemen trailed 9-7 midway through the first quarter when the Wildcats got a three-pointer from White and a layup from Titus to take a 12-9 lead. UDC answered with a 5-0 run of its own, before Titus drilled back-to-back three-pointers that gave the Wildcats an 18-14 lead with 1:36 left in the quarter. A triple by junior Tyra Coombs (Mechanicsville, Md.) 20 seconds later sparked the Firebirds on a quarter-ending 7-0 run that gave the hosts a 21-18 lead.
Daemen opened the second quarter with an 11-0 run that featured three-pointers from Egan and Titus. Egan made one of two free throws with 5:30 left in the quarter to cap the run and give the Wildcats a 29-21 lead. Daemen would manage just two points the rest of the quarter and the teams headed into intermission tied at 31-31.
UDC opened the second half with a jumper by Lloyd, before the Wildcats took control with 16 unanswered points. White scored seven points during the run and a layup by Egan with 3:32 left in the quarter capped the rally and gave Daemen a 47-33 lead. The Wildcats took a 52-40 lead into the fourth quarter.
Daemen went without a field goal over the first 4:39 of the fourth quarter, but UDC was unable to take advantage and the Daemen lead was still 11 points, 55-44, when Heinold drilled a three-pointer with 5:21 to play. UDC answered with a layup by sophomore Danielle Harrington (Gainsville, Va.), but Daemen got a put back by Egan and two free throws by Egan to increase the lead to 16 points, 62-46, with just over four minutes left.
Daemen shot 52-percent (12-for-23) from the field in the second half and finished 24-for-50 (48%) overall. The Wildcats drilled six three-pointers in the first half and finished 9-for 24 from long range. Daemen made 13-of-20 from the charity stripe. UDC shot 35-percent (19-for-55) from the field overall and made 6-of-22 from three-point land. The hosts went 16-of-19 from the charity stripe. Daemen finished with a 41-27 edge in total rebounds, and the visitors also held the advantage in second chance points (10-6) and points in the paint (22-18).
The Wildcats close out the regular season next weekend when they host Mercy College (Mar. 1) and the University of Bridgeport (Mar. 3) in ECC games. Daemen rolled to road wins over Mercy (72-47) and Bridgeport (75-53) last month.
