NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y.. - The Daemen College women's tennis team closed out its 2018-19 season with a 6-1 loss to Niagara University in a non-conference match here today. Daemen saw its five-match winning streak come to an end and closed out the year with a record of 6-18. It also marked the season finale for Niagara, a NCAA Division I member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Purple Eagles closed out the year with a 6-14 record.
The Purple Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the match after scoring a pair of wins in doubles play to open the match. In a new scoring format for NCAA Division I and II matches this season, the outcome of doubles matches will award a single point to the team winning at least two of the three matchups, as opposed to awarding points for each individual doubles victory.
DC's top pair of Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) and Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) suffered a 6-2 loss to Olga Donchu and Megan Gamble. NU collected the point after Shannon Wong and Andreea Peteu defeated Courtney Otis andSarah Kenny by a score of 6-0.
NU secured the win after Donchu, Peteu and Wong posted straight-set wins at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles spots. Donchu defeated Stasiuk, 6-1, 6-1, Peteu downed Robins 6-1, 6-0 and Wong got past Kenny 6-0, 6-1. Daemen collected its lone point of the match after Otis posted a 6-4, 6-0 win over Lila Trunzo at No. 4 singles.
Today's action marked the final collegiate match for Robins, the lone senior on the team. She closes out her outstanding career ranked first in total singles matches played (102), second in total doubles matches played (102), third in most career singles wins (42), third in most career doubles wins (30) and third in most combined singles & doubles wins (72).
Stasiuk, who set the team record for singles wins in a season (18) last year, led the team in singles wins (11) for the second-straight year and will enter her junior year ranked fourth in career singles wins (29). She also became just the fourth player in team history to record back-to-back seasons of 10 or more singles wins.
