With the loss, Daemen drops to 0-2 on the season. Millersville, a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, moves to 1-0. The Marauders opened up a 1-0 lead in the match by sweeping through doubles play. Esperanza Contador and Julie Wallace were 6-1 winners in the No. 1 position, and the duo of Kelsey Heckert and Victoria Hanus delivered the point with their 6-0 win in the No. 3 position. The Daemen pair of Emily Clough (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Courtney Otis (Marcellus, N.Y.) pushed MU's Jasmine Morris and Corinne Grohoski in the No. 2 position, but fell 7-6. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, it was more of the same as the match shifted to singles play. For the second straight day, freshman Lena Gruber (Munich, Germany) nearly overcame a slow start to force a third set, but she ultimately fell in the No. 1 position to Contador 6-2, 7-6. Wallace delivered a win over Daemen veteran Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) in the No. 2 spot, 6-3, 6-4. Morris (6-3, 6-1) and Heckert (6-0, 6-0) delivered wins, as did Hannah Bryan (6-1, 6-1) and Maria Ojeda (6-1, 6-0). Daemen will look to jump in the win column next Wednesday, Sept. 11 when they visit Edinboro University. The Wildcats scored their first-ever win over the Fighting Scots when the teams last met in February. Daemen College features the only NCAA Division II athletics program in the Buffalo-Niagara region, sponsoring 17 intercollegiate teams.
