Daemen, which had suffered losses earlier this month to high-profile Division I programs UCLA, Pepperdine and Harvard, moved to 1-3 on the season. The Wildcats are in the midst of just the second season in program history, and they remain the only NCAA Division II men's volleyball program north of the Mason-Dixon Line. D'Youville, which competes in NCAA Division III and the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, fell to 0-1 with the loss in their season opener. It also marked Daemen's second win in three all-time meetings with the Spartans. The teams split a pair of meetings last season. TOP PERFORMERS Freshman outside hitter Zach Schneider (Lockport, N.Y.) was the top dog for Daemen today as he posted a double-double with match-highs of 11 kills and 10 digs. Schneider, who attacked at a .300 clip in the match, added a pair of service aces. Freshmen Jake Couzens (Hamburg, N.Y.) and Ryan Parker (Fairport, N.Y.) chipped in seven and six kills, respectively, while combining on a .346 hitting percentage. Couzens added two service aces, and Parker tallied six digs. Freshman setter Gavin Musielak (Eden, N.Y.) ran the offense, finishing with a match-high 29 assists. Dan Busha (six kills) and Karl Jauch (11 assists) paced D'Youville. HOW IT HAPPENED Daemen rattled off 10 of the first 11 points in the opening set and cruised from there, winning the set 25-12. The Wildcats pounded down 13 kills and committed just one hitting error in the set (.522 hitting percentage). D'Youville managed to keep things close in the second set. They led 12-11 before Daemen went on a 7-1 run to create the largest separation of the set at 18-13. Redshirt sophomore middle hitter Brandon Casterline (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) accounted for two kills and combined with Schneider on a block in the spurt. D'Youville came back to even the count at 22-22, but Daemen got back-to-back kills from Couzens and Schneider, and later took the set (25-23) following a D'Youville hitting error. The Wildcats jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the third set, but D'Youville clawed back within two at 16-14 following a kill by Busha. Daemen responded with eight-straight points, including three of Casterline's five kills. Parker would end the set (25-15) and the match with a kill. Daemen totaled 36 kills - a season-high for a three-set match - and had a season-best .324 hitting percentage. On the flip side, D'Youville was limited to just 17 kills and a -.013 hitting percentage. NEXT SERVE Daemen returns to action with three home matches next weekend. They'll face Wittenberg on Friday (Jan. 31) night, followed by matches Saturday (Feb. 1) afternoon against St. John Fisher and Alderson Broaddus. Print Friendly Version
